Position Overview

The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire a Security Officer for the Shapiro Center located in Kankakee Illinois to perform fire safety and protection services. Conducts rounds of inspection. Checks buildings and grounds for unauthorized movement breeches of security and unsafe conditions. Enforces vehicle speed parking regulations and other traffic controls at the facility. Participates in crisis searches for missing individuals. Responds to emergency medical and fire alarms. Assists in the evacuation of individuals during drills and emergency situations by helping them out of buildings.

Essential Functions

  • Performs fire safety and protection services at the Shapiro Center.
  • Assists facility staff with management of combative and/or violent individuals.
  • Interviews witnesses regarding complaints and submits reports to investigator.
  • Enforces vehicle speed parking regulations and other traffic controls at the facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.

*Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program shall have the state requirements of this classification waived by successful completion of specific tests and training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the use of security enforcement practices and techniques.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.
  • Two (2) years of experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to physically restrain individuals as necessary to prevent injury to the patient or others.
  • Requires ability to climb stairs chase runaways and physically restrain and control individuals.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to work after business hours weekends and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment including personal computers.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires a valid drivers license.
  • Requires the ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Requires the ability to work in a 24 hour on-call capacity.
  • Requires the ability to utilized programs such as Microsoft Office to create reports.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
