Townsville Hospital and Health Service is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Advanced to join its Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team.
This is a powerful opportunity for someone who wants to walk alongside young people families carers clinicians Elders and community organisations to strengthen cultural safety in mental health care.
In this role your cultural knowledge lived experience community connection and professional practice will be respected and valued. You will help ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people feel safe heard understood and supported throughout their care journey.
About the role
As part of the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team you will help provide culturally safe respectful and community informed care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children young people and families accessing Child and Youth Mental Health Services.
You will work closely with clinical teams families carers Elders and community organisations to support stronger engagement culturally appropriate care planning and better outcomes for young people.
This role is about more than service delivery. It is about connection trust advocacy and making sure culture is central to care.
What you will be doing
In this role you will:
- Support cultural assessments and contribute to culturally appropriate care planning
- Build strong relationships with young people families carers and community organisations
- Provide cultural advice and guidance to the broader Child and Youth Mental Health Service team
- Support young people to feel culturally safe respected and heard
- Work alongside clinicians to strengthen culturally responsive practice
- Help improve engagement and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children young people and families
- Contribute to a culturally strong supportive and community focused service environment
About you
This role would suit someone who is passionate about supporting young people strengthening cultural safety and improving mental health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
You may bring experience from health mental health alcohol and other drugs youth work community services peer work cultural support or family support settings.
Most importantly you bring cultural knowledge a strong sense of community responsibility and a genuine commitment to walking with young people and families through their care journey.
Essential requirements
This is an identified role. Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 there is a genuine occupational requirement for the person appointed to this role to be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
Applicants will hold one of the following qualifications.
For appointment between HWF3.1 to HWF3.5:
- Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
- Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work
- Certificate IV in Mental Health
- Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs
For appointment between HWF3.2 to HWF3.7 or HWF3.8 limited to employees who meet the requirements of HED 04/23:
- Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
- Diploma of Mental Health
- Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs
Suitable applicants without the Certificate IV may be appointed temporarily at the HWF3 no qualification level with support to complete the required qualification under HR Policy G10 Study and Research Assistance Scheme. Once completed the appointee will progress to a permanent HWF3.1 level.
