Summary

Within the context of a client and family centred model of care and in accordance with the Mission Vision and Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care the person promotes a safe respectful and civil working environment for patients residents families visitors and staff.

Reporting to the Executive Director Professional Practice Nursing & Clinical Informatics the Director Nursing Education:

  • Leads the coordination and decision making within Providence Health Care (PHC) on matters related to the development implementation evaluation and ongoing monitoring of clinical education for nursing including education frameworks standards education needs assessments planning instructional design organizational readiness resource development resource distribution education delivery modes and research and evaluation of education in order to in support quality practice environments as well as achieving successful and sustainable large scale organizational change.
  • Ensures sustainable programming and leverages adult learning principles and theories by developing strategies that enable interactive experiential learning methods and creative experimentation with new knowledge informing new delivery models through learning simulation user experience and innovation. The Director Nursing Education contributes to quality practice environments through building and maintaining a learning culture for staff and students that promotes excellence safety respect collaboration inter-professionalism person and family centered care accountability mastery and discovery.
  • Key interactions include internal and external contacts and partners and represents PHC on appropriate committees and advisory groups (e.g. health authority academic institutions specialty education provincial and ministry meetings) health authorities First Nations health centres and staff Indigenous organizations and patients/family members and members of the public.

What You Bring

Education Training and Experience:

  • A level of education training and experience equivalent to a Masters degree in a relevant field such as Education (Adult Education Education Leadership Education Administration) Health Care or Nursing plus 7 (seven) to 10 (ten) years of experience in leadership roles including five years of recent related health care experience.
  • Current practicing registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC). Eligibility for a joint appointment with Universities and colleges in the Province.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership and initiative in developing implementing and evaluating education programs and policy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and wellness; community organizations and services; and trends relating to health and wellness.
  • Knowledge and comprehension of PHCs Mission Vision Values and strategic priorities.
  • Knowledge of complex organizational and system dynamics in terms of involving multiple stakeholders and partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership guidance and direction to staff to build effective partnerships and to build credibility understanding and trust within the organization and with external partners and organizations.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills including strong executive writing and presentation skills.
  • Advanced skills in complex problem solving planning project management change management and group process.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • General knowledge of current health care issues and trends.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment critical thinking and effective decision-making.
  • Ability to respond to changing priorities and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Ability to effectively manage budget and staff resources.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and word-processing skills.

Your Day to Day:

  • Provides leadership for the development implementation and ongoing monitoring of the Portfolio strategic plan as well as informing clinical education related Program/Department priorities and strategic plans.
  • Leads the development implementation evaluation and ongoing monitoring of clinical education for nursing including education frameworks standards education needs assessments planning instructional design organizational readiness resource development resource distribution education delivery modes and research and evaluation of education in order to in support quality practice environments as well as achieving successful and sustainable large scale organizational change.
  • Anticipates future changes in practice and recommends transition strategies that optimize the standardization efficiency appropriateness sustainability flexibility consistency and quality of Clinical Education programs.
  • Leads supports and maintains a human resources plan that align nursing/interprofessional education goals and objectives in order to provide the highest level of service to the organization. This includes recruitment strategies development and retention initiatives performance management and an education/ training plan for direct reports Creates and maintains partnerships with relevant academic institutions professional associations policy makers and other external agencies on a provincial national and international level to keep current and influence curriculum development/ re-design for health care students and professionals that meet present and future strategic and clinical service needs both at PHC and provincially.
  • Provides recommendations advice and council to educational leaders regarding Clinical Education by participating in cross-discipline committees and site-specific councils where appropriate.
  • Leads the negotiation and collaboration with academic partners and many other provincial national and international academic institutions regarding the terms of affiliation agreements and the placement of students.
  • Develops coordinates and monitors student placement clinical experience pathways and evaluative processes and maintains contact with hosting programs/services and staff students educational faculty and clinical practicum coordinators.
  • Develops coordinates and monitors Employed Student Nurse (ESN) Internationally Educated Nursing (IEN) and New Grad (NG) clinical experience pathways and evaluative processes and maintains contact with hosting programs/services and staff students educational faculty.
  • Delivers evaluates and monitors specialty education by collaborating with operational leaders and provincial partners seeking out and identifying best practices ensuring appropriate structures system processes and resources are in place to facilitate ongoing delivery of specialty education across varying complex practice environments.
  • Leads specialty education for PHC including delivering evaluating and monitoring specialty education by collaborating with operational leaders and provincial partners seeking out and identifying best practices ensuring appropriate structures system processes and resources are in place to facilitate ongoing delivery of specialty education across varying complex practice environments.
  • Leads the development of PHC education policies systems and procedures standards and outcome targets and assures quality in PHC education programs and services.
  • Supports management of nursing professional practice issues through development/ consultation on learning plans.
  • Informs models of care recommendations to operations by providing expert advice on education requirements and ability to develop and maintain competencies to best fit patient/client/resident care needed based on the service delivery plan.
  • Keeps up to date on current trends in health care leadership and adult education by reviewing literature attending relevant conferences/continuing education liaising with external organizations industry advisory groups and members of professional associations in order to identify and promote strategic improvement opportunities through partnership innovation education best practices and technology for the organization.
  • Initiates and leads clinical education related projects secures funds and develops business cases and funding proposals.
  • Conducts impact analysis for clinical education initiatives contributes to program planning expansion and implementation as required for other areas on discipline specific and interprofessional projects.
  • Develops and manages the annual overall budget for Nursing Education. Responsibilities include monitoring budget performance planning and adjusting operations and/ or staffing to meeting projections and annual targets and approving expenditures and preparing summaries for fiscal reporting and liaises with representatives of Finance in addition to the Executive Director on budget matters.
  • Leads supports and promotes collaboration on organizational regional provincial and federal clinical education initiatives that develop and optimize culturally safe care/service across the continuum promoting Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in hiring and all educational programing.
  • Performs other duties as required.
