Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County Powhatan County and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in the Chesterfield Health Department.

Are you interested in providing clinical care while working on ways to address the upstream causes of preventable diseases The Chesterfield Health District is looking for a physician-leader who has a taste for innovation to complement a team thats working on ways to reduce the burden of disease in our communities by influencing causative factors.

The Medical Director serves as chief clinician in a health district and is responsible for formal supervision of other Physicians pharmacy operations clinical social workers certified nurse practitioners and others as designated by assigning scheduling reviewing and formally evaluating their work. Also provides direct care by performing examinations diagnoses treats counsels and prescribes treatments for patients and makes referrals as needed to other medical and clinical specialists. Work requires licensure by the Virginia Board of Medicine.

The individual must be able to independently supervise staff manage medical practice matters manage programs delegated by District Health Director and perform routine interactions with local organizations and health professionals. Keeps Director informed of urgent and controversial matters contact with elected officials and progress in areas of program responsibility. The Medical Director will also serve as a member of the districts Senior Management Team working closely with the Health Director and Managers to achieve the VDH mission.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure by Virginia Board of Medicine is required

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and clinical preventive
medicine

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Skilled in use of automation for data collection and analysis and in presentations and teaching

Ability to effectively work independently and as a member of a team work with the media and
cope with change in the workplace

Knowledge of Communicable Disease Investigation and surveillance activates

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of public health and clinical preventive medicine

Ability to examine diagnose and effectively treat a variety of patients and to coordinate work and maintain strong relationships with the professional and non-professional medical community

Experience in managing medical professionals and programs preferably public health

Additional Considerations

Board certification/eligibility in preventive medicine or equivalent combination of training and experience

Training and Experience in prenatal care
