About Santa Fe South West Middle School

Santa Fe South West Middle School opened in the school year and is a growing campus intentionally designed to serve the Southwest Oklahoma City community. About Santa Fe South Pathways Middle College

Santa Fe South Pathways Middle College is an innovative program located on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College. Pathways is an Oklahoma Blue Ribbon School and ranks among the top 5% of high schools in the state.

Through its Early/Middle College model students can earn up to an associates degree before graduating from high schoolat no cost to 2025 76% of Pathways graduates earned an associates degree far exceeding the national average of 23%.

Pathways emphasizes innovation project-based learning mentoring and strong relationships. Its unique Harry Potterinspired HOUSE system fosters belonging leadership and community creating a school where students are deeply known supported and challenged to succeed.

Position Summary

The Secondary School Counselor supports students across two Santa Fe South campuses spending approximately 60% of their time at West Middle School and 40% at Santa Fe South Pathways Middle College. This position plays a critical role in supporting students academic planning social-emotional development and preparation for postsecondary opportunities.

Santa Fe South counselors serve as advocates for students and partners to families educators and community organizations. Counselors collaborate closely with site administration teachers and district support teams to ensure students receive the services and resources necessary to thrive academically socially and emotionally.

This position includes approximately 80% counseling responsibilities and 20% administrative responsibilities which may include scheduling testing coordination and other operational support functions within the school.

Counselors work alongside site leaders to support student success but do not administer discipline or consequences. Instead they partner with leadership to guide behavior support student problem-solving and family engagement when students need additional support.

Secondary counselors also play an important role in academic planning graduation progress monitoring and helping students prepare for college and career opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Counseling Services (Approximately 80%)

Academic Planning & Postsecondary Readiness

  • Assist students with appropriate course selection and academic planning aligned to graduation requirements.
  • Monitor student progress toward graduation and support students in developing postsecondary plans.
  • Provide guidance related to college and career readiness opportunities including dual credit and early college pathways when applicable.

Student Counseling & Social-Emotional Support

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students academic social and emotional needs.
  • Help students develop coping strategies emotional regulation skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Advocate for students mental health and overall well-being.
  • Observe students consult with staff and implement appropriate interventions to support student success.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with teachers administrators and school staff to create a supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain open communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives professional learning communities and community outreach efforts.
  • Support school events and engagement opportunities such as family resource nights literacy nights ICAP events and district community initiatives.

Case Management & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions counseling services and progress.
  • Develop and implement individualized support plans for students as needed.
  • Provide case management services by connecting students and families with outside resources and community services when appropriate.

Crisis Intervention & Student Safety

  • Respond to immediate mental health needs and connect families to outside agencies such as Family & Childrens Services.
  • Assess respond to and document situations where students may be at risk of harm including suicide ideation child abuse or neglect concerns or threats to self or others.
  • Collaborate with site administration and district crisis counselors to ensure student safety.
  • Support attendance intervention efforts by working with families to address barriers to consistent school participation.

Data Analysis & Student Support

  • Analyze student data related to academic performance attendance and behavior trends.
  • Implement evidence-based interventions and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Assist in developing school-wide programs that promote positive behavior mental health awareness and student well-being.

Administrative Responsibilities (Approximately 20%)

  • Support administrative responsibilities assigned by the principal or designated supervisor.
  • Assist with operational functions such as state testing coordination (potentially serving as Building Test Coordinator) and scheduling.
  • Support student engagement initiatives and campus-wide programs.

Even with administrative responsibilities included in this role Santa Fe South counselors do not administer discipline or assign consequences. Counselors instead work alongside site leaders to support student behavior guidance problem-solving and family communication.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution
  • Valid Oklahoma teaching certification or eligibility to obtain School Counselor certification

Preferred

  • Masters degree in School Counseling or a related field
  • State certification/licensure as a School Counselor
  • Experience supporting middle school or secondary students
  • Experience with college and career readiness planning
  • Experience connecting families with community support services
