About the Geological Sciences Department

The Geological Sciences Department aspires to provide the highest quality education in Earth Science and its applications. Through hands-on learning faculty-mentored research and exposure to current technology students acquire skills applicable to careers in geosciences and related fields. The department emphasizes understanding Earth system processes and their interrelationships arming students with a global perspective for problem solving decision making and leadership in a rapidly changing world.

The department emphasizes a learn-by-doing approach grounded in interdisciplinary fieldwork laboratory analysis and modern geospatial technologies. Students choose from emphases in geology geophysics/earth exploration or environmental geoscience all of which integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. The program supports a collaborative and inclusive academic culture that prepares students for both professional practice and advanced study.

The Position

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open and positions are filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be welcome applications from individuals who are experienced and student-centered to teach in the following subject areas taught within the department: Oceanography Meteorology Engineering Geology or Introduction to Geology.

Responsibilities

Teach assigned division courses in the departments curriculum and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load. Assignments may include day evening and/or weekend courses in a variety of modes (in-person asynchronous or synchronous).

Required Qualifications

  • A masters degree in Geology or related discipline in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Geology or related discipline
  • Prior teaching experience at the college or university level and ability to furnish evidence of strong teaching.
  • Industry experience

Salary and Benefit Information

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Initial appointments are for one semester full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.

Most new appointees are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank and placed at the beginning of the range. Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications not to exceed $6221 per month. As of July 2024 the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

Lecturer A: $5507 - $ 6677
Lecturer B: $6221 - $13224
Lecturer C: $6825 - $14523
Lecturer D: $8593 - $15211
