Position Summary

The Elementary School Counselor at Spero Elementary plays a critical role in supporting students social emotional and academic development. Working in close partnership with site leadership district crisis counselors teachers and families the counselor ensures students have access to the support and resources they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

This position is structured as approximately 80% counseling services and 20% administrative support within the school. The counselor provides individual and small-group counseling delivers guidance lessons supports attendance intervention efforts and collaborates with staff to foster a positive and supportive school culture. Counselors also play an important role in identifying student needs connecting families with resources and ensuring appropriate response protocols when student safety concerns arise.

While counselors work closely with site administrators to support student behavior and well-being they do not administer discipline or consequences instead partnering with leadership to guide behavior support problem-solving and family communication.

Key Responsibilities

Counseling Services (Approximately 80%)

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students academic social and emotional needs in developmentally appropriate ways.
  • Help students develop coping strategies emotional regulation skills and problem-solving abilities through whole-group guidance lessons small groups and individual sessions.
  • Advocate for students mental health and overall well-being across the school environment.
  • Conduct student observations consultations and assessments to determine appropriate interventions and supports.
  • Deliver classroom guidance lessons and targeted small-group supports based on student needs.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with teachers administrators and school staff to build and maintain a supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain open and proactive communication with parents and guardians regarding student needs progress and concerns.
  • Collaborate with district crisis counselors site administration and community organizations to ensure students receive appropriate services and support.
  • Participate in professional learning communities school initiatives and community engagement efforts.
  • Support school events and family engagement opportunities such as family resource nights literacy nights ICAP events and other student-focused programs.

Case Management & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions counseling services and progress monitoring.
  • Develop and implement individualized support plans when appropriate.
  • Provide case management services by connecting families with internal and community-based resources that support student well-being and success.

Crisis Intervention & Student Safety

  • Respond to situations where students may be at risk of harm including concerns related to suicide ideation child abuse or neglect or threats to self or others.
  • Follow district protocols and collaborate with site leadership and district counseling leadership to ensure appropriate response and student safety.
  • Support attendance intervention efforts by working with families to identify and address barriers to consistent school attendance.

Data Analysis & Schoolwide Student Support

  • Analyze student data related to attendance academic performance and behavior trends to identify needs and guide intervention strategies.
  • Implement and monitor evidence-based supports and interventions.
  • Assist in developing schoolwide initiatives that promote positive behavior mental health awareness and a supportive school culture.

Administrative & School Support Responsibilities (Approximately 20%)

  • Support administrative and operational needs within the building as assigned by the principal or supervisor.
  • Assist with schoolwide coordination responsibilities such as state testing (including potentially serving as Building Test Coordinator).
  • Support student engagement events and initiatives that strengthen school culture.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or designated supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in School Counseling or a related field required.
  • State certification/licensure as a School Counselor preferred; candidates actively working toward certification are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated ability to support students social-emotional development and academic success.
  • Strong collaboration communication and relationship-building skills with students families and staff.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention procedures and student safety protocols.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism.
