Starting salary for this position is: $20.09 (Hourly)
Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.

JOB SUMMARY

The Spokane Falls Community College Drama Program is seeking a skilled and collaborative Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 1 (Lead Scenic Carpenter/Master Carpenter) to support the technical operations of the Spartan Theatre. This part-time hourly position will support scenery construction installation maintenance and strike for departmental productions and events during the academic year.

Reporting to the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and working alongside the Drama Programs Director of Drama Drama Instructional Technician faculty staff and students the Master Carpenter ensures safe and effective practices in the scene shop supports live events and productions and helps create an inclusive and professionally aligned learning environment.

This role is ideal for an experienced Master Carpenter or lead scenic technician with a strong background in shop safety and technical theatre practices.

This is a permanent hourly position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as lead scenic carpenter (Master Carpenter) for departmental productions and events supporting scenic construction installation maintenance and strike. *
• Translate scenic designs into build plans including drafting material selection and construction sequencing. *
• Supervise and guide scenic construction projects in the scene shop ensuring quality efficiency and adherence to timelines. *
• Maintain a safe clean and organized scene shop and backstage environment. *
• Enforce and model proper shop safety practices for students staff and volunteers. *
• Work collaboratively with students faculty staff and guest artists to meet production deadlines. *
• Provide direct mentorship and hands-on instruction to student crew members and practicum students in carpentry tool use and shop protocols. *
• Support public performances special events and class-related projects requiring scenic or structural support. *
• Participate in regular safety inspections and comply with college safety protocols. *
• Perform routine maintenance on shop tools and equipment; assist with inventory purchasing recommendations and material management. *
• Attend weekly planning meetings and coordinate scenic priorities with the Instructional Technician and production team. *
• Adapt to the evolving needs of a live production environment with flexibility professionalism and a problem-solving initiative. *
• Assist with or support scenic design implementation (and when appropriate provide design input related to construction feasibility). *
• Model professional decorum mutual respect and ethical leadership in all interactions. *
• Comply with district policies procedures and directives state and federal regulations orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
• Support and advance Spokane Colleges strategic plan and perform other duties as assigned. *

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• One year of professional or collegiate experience in technical theatre or related fields with a strong emphasis on scenic construction and carpentry.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of scene shop safety protocols hand and power tools and materials commonly used in scenic construction.
• Experience reading or interpreting scenic drawings and translating them into build plans.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and work safely at heights (ladders lifts etc.).
• Strong communication skills and a commitment to teamwork in an educational environment.
• Ability to work independently prioritize tasks and maintain a self-directed workflow.
• Willingness to work flexible hours aligned with production and shop schedules.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working in a Master Carpenter or lead scenic technician in an educational community or professional theatre setting.
• Experience supervising or mentoring students interns or early-career technicians.
• Familiarity with basic drafting CAD or shop documentation practices.
• Ability and willingness to collaborate with designers and faculty to problem-solve scenic challenges.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity inclusion and collaborative learning environments.
• First Aid/CPR certification and/or OSHA-10 certification (or willingness to obtain).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work is performed in a theatre and scene shop environment with frequent interruptions and background noise.
• Work is active and physically demanding.
• Move up to 25 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Team lifts are encouraged and to be used at the employees discretion.
• Occasional to frequent kneeling crouching crawling climbing and working at floor or elevated levels.
• Occasional to frequent repetitive reaching grabbing and stretching.
• Operates and controls hand tools power tools and large mechanized powered and non-powered equipment.
• Work directly with students and clients.
• Enters crouches twists works and climbs in and out of confined spaces.
• Occasional exposure to fumes dust odors and/or biohazards.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Permanent hourly position.
• Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
• This position is overtime eligible.
• This position has a 6-month probationary period.
• Criminal background check is required.
• May be required to work alternate shifts.
• This position is eligible for coverage under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.

This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
