PhD Stipend in machine learning methods for the analysis of IoT time-series data.

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design Department of Computer Science one PhD stipend in machine learning methods for the analysis of IoT time-series data is available within the general study programme Computer Science. The stipend is open for appointment August1 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The stipend is available for 3 years and requires that the applicant has an MSc. degree at the start of the stipend.

The research in the Data Engineering Science and Systems (DESS) research group focuses on data-intensive systems spatio-temporal data management data analytics and applications of machine learning with applications in digital energy and intelligent transport. The stipend relates to the project titled An Integrated Approach to IoT Data Analytics. The project aims to integrate complementary but related expertise across the Departments of Electronic Systems and Computer Science at AAU. Together with medical experts the project aims to invent solutions for activity monitoring of older adults in their homes using wireless infrastructure data. For example this may enable detection of vital signs of adults falling and of decline in cognitive abilities. The solutions aim to be unobtrusive deployable and cost-efficient. The PhD stipend concerns the invention of machine learning-based methods for data analysis in this setting.

Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time. As part of the PhD study you are among other things required to complete PhD courses corresponding to 30 ECTS gain experience with teaching or other forms of knowledge dissemination and complete an external research stay outside of Aalborg University preferably 3-6 months at a foreign research institution.

Your qualifications

Prospective applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • MSc. degree in computer science
  • Solid mathematical and analytical skills
  • Solid knowledge and skills in time series machine learning
  • Significant experience in programming
  • A desire to invent new solutions in collaboration with senior and junior researchers

The successful candidate will be part of the Data Section in the Department of Computer Science.

A dedicated supervisory team led by Professor Christian S. Jensen and composed of experts from the Departments of Electronic Systems and Computer Science support the PhD project. The Data Section provides a world-class research environment outstanding working and networking opportunities and full employment benefits including a competitive salary.

In addition to research activities the candidate will contribute to teaching and supervision within the programmes at the Department of Computer Science. Activities may include supervision of student projects and participation in courses.
