Job Description:

We are seeking a Support Scientist IV to join a team supporting scientific algorithm development for NASA Earth science data at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) on the ATMOS contract. This role focuses on scientific expertise of software development to continue development of NASAs Black Marble products.

The position will support the MODIS VIIRS and TEMPO projects by developing advanced night light products for these instruments and cross calibrating between the various instruments.

ATMOS is a NASA support services contract that provides advanced scientific engineering and technical expertise to enable Earth and space science missions. The program supports research data analysis technology development and mission operations across multiple NASA centers. Through ATMOS our teams deliver innovative solutions that help advance NASAs mission and expand scientific discovery.

This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of Earth system science data science and cloud computing supporting NASA missions and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Scientific Algorithm Development

  • Develop prototype algorithms for nighttime hyperspectral applications including light type classification aurora detection and gas flare detection.
  • Maintain and enhance the black marble science product for MODIS and VIIRS as well as develop new applications of dark blue including aurora detection and solar-terrestrial applications.
  • Develop AI/ML approaches for night light classification including data preparation training and model evaluation.
  • Design algorithms to grid night light and dark blue science products to common grids.
  • Conduct cross-sensor analysis between VIIRS and TEMPO to better calibrate and quantify uncertainty.
  • Validate the MODIS and VIIRS dark blue products utilizing various statistical approaches.

Collaboration & Scientific Support

  • Work closely with NASA scientists to translate research needs into computational solutions.
  • Contribute to scientific publications technical documentation and conference presentations.
  • Participate in collaborative research efforts supporting NASA Earth science missions and programs.

Requirements
  • 10 years of research experience in atmospheric or related sciences.
  • Experience developing science algorithms particularly with MODIS and VIIRS dark blue algorithms
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong background in programming (FORTRAN Python C/C).
  • Ability to meet NASA IT security requirements and obtain/maintain a NASA badge

Education:

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric science physical science mathematics computer science or equivalent.
