Description of Work

This position serves as the Division of Marine Fisheries Deputy Director Fisheries Science and Management (FS/M) and reports to the Division Director. The Deputy Director provides operational leadership and management to the Fisheries Science License and Statistics Fishery Management and Policy sections in establishing and implementing division and program operational goals to allow the division to meet its mission of ensuring sustainable fisheries and habitats for the benefit and health of the people of North Carolina. The Deputy Director assists the Director in working with the Marine Fisheries Commission other fisheries management councils and commissions and other stakeholders external to the division in establishing fisheries management policy. The Deputy Director is assigned leadership roles for special projects as the Director deems necessary. The Deputy Director (FS/M) will work closely with the Division of Marine Fisheries Deputy Director Operations to ensure that the overall DEQ and Division goals are met.

Key Responsibilities:
Directs Section Chiefs to ensure accomplishment of DEQ and division goals and appropriate application of federal and state laws and regulations.
Manage day-to-day operational priorities of the Secretary Director Legislative members and public progress toward longer term programmatic or management goals.
Ensure budget and personnel issues are properly managed.
Participate in the development communication and implementation of strategic and operational plans and procedures to guide staff in the applicable sections in the administration of all division programs.
Valid Drivers License required

The Division of Marine Fisheries

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the states marine and estuarine resources. The DMFs jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive experience in environmental work including two years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
