Job Summary

About the Positions

Were seeking experienced Structural Steel Bridge Inspectors to support large complex bridge and transportation infrastructure programs within highways roads and bridges transit (bus and rail) and related heavy-civil environments delivered through both traditional and alternative methods. These roles support inspection of structural steel fabrication and field erection activities for cable stayed bridge and transportation programs including welded and bolted connections material certification fracture-critical members cable stressing document adjustments to stay forces anchorage inspections and protective coatings systems. Work may occur in fabrication shops active construction sites or both depending on program needs. These are not general construction inspection roles. These positions are intended for inspectors with demonstrated experience working on structural steel bridge systems in complex environments where quality compliance and documentation are critical.

Responsibilitiesmay include but are not limited to the following:

  • Inspect structural steel fabrication activities in shop and field environments including welding operations bolting material traceability and dimensional tolerances.
  • Perform field inspection of structural steel erection activities including fit-up alignment connection installation and erection sequencing.
  • Support inspection of bridge superstructure systems beyond structural steel elements including deck systems (cast-in-place or precast segmental where applicable) closure pours and match casting bearings expansion joints and deck post-tensioning systems to verify proper installation and load path continuity.
  • Verify compliance with approved shop drawings erection procedures contract specifications and applicable codes and standards.
  • Perform inspections in accordance with approved Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) programs Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and project specifications contract requirements and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Review welding procedures (WPS) procedure qualification records (PQR) welder qualifications and mill test reports.
  • Inspect welded and high-strength bolted connections and verify proper installation methods.
  • Monitor overall fabrication and installation of structural steel elements with emphasis on fracture-critical members and compliance with project requirements.
  • Inspect stay cable systems including material certification anchorage hardware installation sequencing and corrosion protection systems (e.g. HDPE sheathing wax grout) recognizing stay cables as fracture-critical components requiring heightened inspection rigor.
  • Support cable stressing and geometry control activities including monitoring cable forces during stressing operations reviewing survey data (e.g. deck elevations and tower deflections) verifying and documenting stay force adjustments and confirming alignment with construction stage analysis and design targets.
  • Coordinate or review nondestructive testing (NDT) activities (e.g. UT MT PT VT) and verify compliance with project requirements.
  • Support coating and corrosion protection inspections including structural steel coating systems and cable protection systems verifying surface preparation environmental conditions and application requirements.
  • Maintain material traceability and detailed inspection documentation including daily reports inspection logs and deficiency tracking.
  • Coordinate with contractors fabricators and project teams to identify and resolve non-conforming work.
  • Interface with owners agencies and oversight entities to support inspection reporting and compliance.
  • Perform work in active construction environments including at heights over water or in other high-risk conditions as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in engineering construction management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7 years of experience inspecting structural steel fabrication and/or erection forcable stayedbridge or transportation structures including experience working independently on complex inspection scopes (general construction inspection experience alone is not sufficient).
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code AASHTO AISC and applicable DOT or federally funded project requirements.
  • Experience inspecting welded and bolted structural steel connections on bridge projects.
  • Experience reviewing shop drawings welding procedures and material certifications.
  • Experience supporting inspection activities in accordance with QA/QC programs and project specifications.
  • Experience documenting inspection activities in compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365 (e.g. Outlook Teams Word Excel PowerPoint etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in engineering or construction management.
  • AWS SeniorCertified Welding Inspector (SCWI).
  • AWS D1.1 endorsement.
  • NACE or AMPP Coating Inspector certification (Level 1 or higher).
  • NDT Level II certification (UT MT or PT).
  • Experience supporting large complex or high-visibility bridge programs (e.g. long-span bridges marine crossings or major rehabilitation/replacement efforts).
  • Experience working with fracture-critical components in fabrication and/or field environments.
  • Experience inspecting both shop fabrication and field erection activities.
  • Familiarity with digital inspection/reporting tools or construction management systems.

Compensation Details

Expected Salary: $85k-$145k/year ($40-$69/hour). Luster provides the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might offer for this position based on the successful candidates level of experience knowledge skills abilities education certifications licenses geographic location etc. Luster reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range depending on circumstances not related to any status protected by local state and/or federal law.
