Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classificationexists is to perform highly skilled technical work in the installation repairand maintenance of the City of Montgomerys electronic traffic control devicesand computerized control and communication systems. Workrequires a broad range of electronics technical knowledge and is performed withconsiderable independence of judgment. Primary work responsibilities mayinclude: monitoring traffic from the TrafficManagement Center (TMC); installing and programming electronic trafficcontrol devices and supporting equipment; responding to service requests andcalls; and performing diagnostic checks and repairs to electronic trafficcontrol devices fiber optic cables and supporting equipment. The ITS Technician I is distinguished fromthe ITS Technician II in that the ITS Technician II serves as the lead workeronsite and typically performs more complex technical duties. The ITSTechnician I receives technical guidance from the Electronic Technician II andreceives supervision from the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

AnAssociates degree in Electronics Electronic Technology Computer ScienceIntelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) or a closely related field and one(1) year of experience in electronics or electrical systems with a strongfocus on the installation maintenance and troubleshooting of traffic signalsystems to include basic network switches fiber optic patch panels andcabling for network devices AC/DC electrical experience and the ability totroubleshoot circuits using multimeters or other test equipment familiarity with Cat5/Cat6 and COAX cableterminations and testing as well as a thorough knowledge of current desktoptechnologies serial communications and TCP/IP concepts is essential.

NOTE: Qualifying education training andexperience that provide the requisite knowledge skills and abilities toperform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must possess or be able to obtain within twoyears of employment a Traffic Signals Level 1 Certification from the IMSA(International Municipal Signal Association). Must possess a valid Alabamadrivers license and insurable driving record as needed to operate Cityvehicles. Must be able to attendspecialized training or classes as needed to maintain or increase skills andupdate equipment. Must be willing to beon call for 24 hours a day/seven days a week at least once a month.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physicalability to lift from 50 to 150 pounds (assisted or unassisted) such as thetraffic controller cabinet. Physical ability to standstoop bend and crouch as needed to make repairs replacements or adjustmentsto equipment. Physical ability to distinguishbetween colors as needed to differentiate between color-coded wires and signallights in order to make repairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Workis performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but notlimited to at heights up to 50 feet above ground in unkempt areas with tallweeds and exposure to local wildlife and in close proximity to heavy traffictraveling at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour. Work is performed in a varietyof weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include extreme heatcold rain and lightning. Work will require some overtime night weekend andholiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.
