Corrections Education Teacher (Welding Education)

JOB ASSIGNMENT: Welding Education/Technology at North Central Secure Treatment Unit (NCSTU) located in Danville PA.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: The Corrections Education Teacher at the North Central Secure Treatment facility reports directly to the Corrections Education Program Principal in conjunction with the Assistant Executive Director/Chief Academic Officer.

JOB DEFINITION: The Corrections Education Teacher at NCSTU will be responsible for daily instruction in welding education/technology for students in a particular school program on the corrections campus based on individual need.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develop and implement instructional methods and curricula for planned courses in welding technology/education that will prepare students for employment in institutional and commercial businesses or other welding-related industries.
2. Responsible for developing quality lesson plans that facilitate student learning using data to plan organize and set goals; and maintain a safe and orderly environment.
3. Responsible for teaching to the Pennsylvania Career and Technology Standards for Welding skills to include Base Metal Preparation; Stick MIG and TIG welding processes; Weld quality in SMAW GMAW and other fabrication designs.
4. Responsible for encouraging and facilitating career planning opportunities in the Manufacturing Metals Fabrication & Welding occupations for students. Responsible for assisting students in obtaining initial industry certifications.
5. Develop and implement a remedial program in safety and sanitation to provide instruction for lower functioning students.
6. Provide skills students can use to successfully compete in the welding job market receive credit from their home school district upon their return from the program or apply to further pursue a vocational welding education.
7. Assessing student needs and providing support or extra resources to struggling students as well as exceptional achievers.
8. Grading tests pop quizzes assignments exams and other assessments and communicating with parents students teachers and counselors regarding underperformance and other concerns.
9. Consistently and accurately document attendance classroom departures safety and security concerns student behaviors and any other necessary information. When applicable determine implement and document replacement instruction. Seek additional opportunities to work collaboratively with outside agencies to support instruction and promote exceptional learning opportunities to advance course curricula.
10. Regularly communicate with education and Department of Human Services (DHS) teams to discuss changes to the school schedule student behavior concerns upcoming projects or tests and other high-priority items.
11. Integrate technological components to improve lesson delivery maintain accurate recordkeeping and develop multimedia skills-based learning.
12. Establish a structured consistent classroom management style that promotes a safe and secure learning environment for all members of the educational community.
13. Provide timely progressive feedback to support goal-oriented learning.
14. Build a strong positive role in the school environment focused on supportive collaborative rapport with students co-teachers and DHS staff.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or designee.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Minimum requirements include either:

• A valid Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Career Technical Education Intern certificate in 2079-Welding issued to an individual currently enrolled in a PDE-approved CTE teacher preparation program for CIP Code 48.0508-Welding Technology/Welder requiring the completion of 18 semester hours within the three (3) calendar year validity of the CTE intern certificate. The intern certificate must be issued on the recommendation of a university or intermediate unit participating in an approved career and technical education teacher preparation program; or
• Will consider candidates with the following:
  • A bachelors degree in a related occupation to welding and a minimum of two (2) years of full-time paid work experience (4000 hours) in the welding trade within the last ten (10) years.
  • a High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) and a minimum of four (4) years full-time paid work experience (8000 hours) in the welding trade within the last ten (10) years. The candidate agrees to obtain a PDE Type 01 Emergency Permit with an Educational Obligation and immediately enroll in a PDE-approved CTE certification program for CIP Code 48.0508-Welding Technology/Welder and complete the requirements to obtain a PDE CTE 2079-Welding certification.
• A demonstrated ability to work with at-risk populations excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively with the agency and residential staff are essential.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to properly maintain open channels of communication with agencies school districts parents members of higher education institutions etc.
• Must have the ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues co-workers community agency personnel and students/trainees.
• Requires the ability to develop and maintain positive collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and to remain calm in unpredictable situations.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding education programs students and parents at all times in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to protect staff and student data.
• Computer experience with Microsoft Word Excel Outlook email internet browsers and artificial intelligence (AI).
• Proficiency in utilizing vetted artificial intelligence (AI) is preferred. Enhancing AI skills will be required.
• Adept at using virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current approved Act 34 (PA State Police) Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).
• Current approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours of training every five (5) years.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS:

1. Maintain PDE certification requirements for Act 48 hours for the Professional Education Records Management System (PERMS) for specific five (5) year periods.
2. Training in and the ability to implement all components of safe crisis management suicide prevention/intervention and first aid/CPR fully are required.
3. Attendance at training seminars and in-service programs is identified as important to the effective operation of a correctional instruction program.
4. Participation in workshops/seminars to increase knowledge in special education.
5. Participation in workshops/seminars to increase computer skills content-area knowledge and various living skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Perform light physical activities including bending lifting and possibly standing for extended periods.
2. Quickly navigate the hallways (which may be filled with students) in the event of an altercation.
3. The ability to implement fully all components of Safe Crisis Management.
4. Sedentary: Able to sit for extended periods of time occasional walking standing (as necessary) and able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
5. Dexterity: Finger movements (computer keyboard calculator) eye-hand coordination (office equipment etc.).
6. Can move throughout all buildings floors and grounds.
7. Worksite Environment: Primarily indoors in an office setting with occasional exposure to outdoor elements/climate during the day.
8. Mental demands: Steady response to unpredictable situations ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations. Demonstrates independent judgment discretion and can manage multiple projects and deadlines.
9. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and a safe manner.
10. Ability to travel to various work site locations and meetings as needed.

TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS:

1. This is a full-time exempt position working under a teacher contract. The schedule involves working 188 days over 11 months (August through June). Some evening meetings may be required.
2. Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.
3. Occasional overnight travel to seminars or training may be required.
