The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop help implement and evaluate evidence-based approaches to substance use and addiction. As a research centre of Providence Health Care Research Institute and a University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Centre the BCCSUs vision is to transform substance use policies and care in BC by translating research into education and evidence-based and culturally appropriate care guidance. By supporting the collaborative development of evidence-based policies Wise Practice supplements and guidelines and standards the BCCSU seeks to improve the integration of best practices and care across the continuum of substance use thereby serving all British Columbians. The BCCSU seeks to achieve these goals through integrated activities of its three core functions: research and evaluation education and training and clinical care BCCSU values and respects all members of its communities each of whom individually and collaboratively contribute to transforming care education training and research in this area.
Within the context of a client and family centred model of care and in accordance with the Mission Vision and Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care and the BC Centre on Substance Use the Knowledge Translation and Design Specialist promotes a safe respectful and civil working environment for patients residents families visitors and staff.
Reporting to the Director or Associate Director of Education and Clinical Activities the Knowledge Translation and Design Specialist collaborates with the Clinical and Education teams people with lived and living experience families interdisciplinary clinical staff subject matter experts and leadership to plan develop design and validate equity-oriented substance use education and related materials.
The Knowledge Translation and Design Specialist executes tasks related to knowledge translation (KT) design and exchange across static and dynamic modalities such as print multimedia infographics web pages and social media. The successful incumbent will be responsible for providing expertise to develop knowledge translation products for the Education and Clinical Activities team which includes end users such as decision-makers and policy-makers clinicians health authority partners and the public. This person works independently within the team to execute KT in accordance with the KT and user engagement and dissemination frameworks developed at the BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU).
The Knowledge Translation and Design Specialist works collaboratively with BCCSU partners and builds consensus for effective knowledge translation/design/exchange and communications implementation within the partnership with leadership and the team the Knowledge Translation and Design Specialist supports program activities by ensuring KT products meet applicable clinical organizational and regulatory requirements and policies.
This is a hybrid-remote opportunity with flexible work arrangements.

What You Bring
Education Training and Experience:
A level of education training and experience equivalent to Masters Degree in a discipline related to health science behavior science healthcare or public health plus five (5) years of recent related experience including experience with Canadian health services and knowledge translation design and exchange.
Skills and Abilities:
Applies comprehensive knowledge and skill in educational theory research technology and related best practices as well as an understanding of health care disciplines and networking abilities to support enhanced educational practices.
An understanding of and commitment to ongoing learning around anti-racism cultural safety and humility and reconciliation.
An understanding of the ways in which laws and policies have contributed to the marginalization of people who use drugs or a willingness to learn.
Strong understanding of topics of health equity substance use and addiction public health research and the social determinants of health and how to apply these to KT and exchange products.
Demonstrated skill developing and designing a diverse range of KT and educational products.
Familiarity with best practices in adult learning and education content design (e.g. blended learning strategies such as online curriculum design videos interactive education delivery and principles of gamification).
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize relevant technology including a variety of computerized software packages such as word processing spreadsheet presentation database applications and internet applications at an advanced level.
Applies exceptional written and verbal communication abilities and computer skills in the design and composition of creative high-quality materials.
Superior process design and project management abilities applied in the development and design of KT products and educational initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work multi-task and work under time pressures to meet deadlines and handle interruptions and competing priorities.
Superior level of initiative accuracy attention to detail and independent error checking.
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Your Day to Day:
collaboratively with BCCSU Education and Clinical Activities team and leaders to understand KT needs develop KT frameworks and develop KT products.
evidence reviews and jurisdictional scans analyzes research identifies key messages and translates findings into accessible information and products for the target audience.
various KT and educational products including but not limited to clinical bulletins guidelines webinars and interactive resources.
learning activities assignments and assessments for clinical audiences.
co-authors and edits diverse KT and educational materials such as web-based content infographics reports guidelines scientific abstracts and presentations. Target audiences may include internal staff community partners and decision-makers the public government health authorities non-governmental organizations Indigenous communities community-based organizations and the private sector.
and supports KT or educational dissemination events.
with other BCCSU teams (e.g. Communications) to support overall quality consistency and effectiveness of complex communication materials.
to increase KT capacity within the Education and Clinical Activities team by advising and assisting with effective KT techniques and methodologies; informing the development and implementation of KT plans; and incorporating Indigenous perspectives and approaches to knowledge translation design and exchange into planning and framework development.
