What are the requirements to become an apprentice with Gas Networks Ireland
  • Candidates must be aged 17 or over on or before 1st June 2026
  • Leaving Certificate*
Ordinary Level D or higher in 5 subjects one to include Mathematics.
*Candidates sitting the 2026 Leaving Certificate exams may also apply and if successful a place may be offered subject to the required results being achieved.

Step 1: Cover letter and curriculum vitae
Please complete the online form and upload your full Curriculum Vitae and cover letter.

Please note the following:
  • Applicants will need to identify the preferred craft in which they wish to qualify and rank them in order of preference Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting or Electrical Instrumentation or Plumbing or no preference
  • Non-EU applicants must have the required work authorisations to work in the Republic of Ireland
  • Do you have additional needs that you wish to disclose(Please contact our Recruitment team at to have aconfidential discussion about potential adjustments or accommodations for you)
Please ensure you have the following:
  • A working e-mail address that is regularly monitored - this is essential as all correspondence is via email
  • Full details of post primary educational examinations - including results and examination year
  • Candidates sitting the 2026 Leaving Certificate exams may also apply and if successful a place
may be offered subject to the required results being achieved
  • Details of further education and training
  • Details of work experience
The closing date for applications is the 5 May 2026.

Step 2: Online assessment
Eligible candidates will receive an invitation via email to complete online aptitude tests. Please monitor your email address regularly to check for correspondence from our contracted partner SHL who will be conducting the aptitude tests on our behalf.
The online assessment entitled Apprentice Job Focused Assessment will measure skills and cognitive ability and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.


Step 3: The interview
The interview will cover a number of areas including:
  • General background info
  • Interests / preferences school subject hobbies etc.
  • Teamwork
  • Basic technical questions to demonstrate interest
  • Work experience
  • Customer service
  • Knowledge of Gas Networks Ireland and the role of an apprentice
  • Initiative - You can use examples from school work experience or any extracurricular activities (sports societies etc).
  • The interviewers will be looking for you to describe specific situations in your examples. If you have completed any construction / technical projects in school for Junior Cert or Leaving Cert you can bring along photos and use them as examples
