Connecting hundreds of community-builders from across the Bow Valley Banff Canmore Foundation is one of more than 200 community foundations across Canada working collaboratively to flow resources to community projects and local initiatives. By coordinating donor contributions building up long-term funds and making grants we work to ensure that community organizations and organizers have the resources needed to address our most important challenges and opportunities through locally-driven solutions both now and in the future.

POSITION OVERVIEW
BCF serves as a platform for building awareness of challenges and opportunities facing Bow Valley community and activating philanthropy to drive meaningful impact. The Communications Director leads this work through creating sharing and amplifying stories that reveal community potential and impact of giving. This position plays a critical role in stewarding BCFs reputation as a trusted and influential voice ensuring BCF is an engaged and visible partner in community building. Through BCFs communication channels the Communication Director creates space for diverse community voices and perspectives strengthening connections across donors partners and grantees.
The ideal candidate brings both strategic insight and practical execution. They are equally comfortable setting direction and producing content thriving in a small-team environment that requires a hands-on approach. A strong writer and storyteller they bring a clear point of view while actively enabling others to share their stories.
The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES
Identify and develop stories
Find and develop meaningful stories about community building in the Bow Valley the organizations and people making an impact and the role BCF plays.
Draw on insights of the BCF team to identify story opportunities.
Connect with community leaders and nonprofit partners to inform the BCF point of view.
Undertake research participate in events and seek out other opportunities to experience the work of BCF to support content development.
Interview grantees partners and donors to develop stories featuring their experiences and perspectives.
Develop story angles that resonate with local audiences.
Create and manage compelling content
Lead the production of written and visual content to support BCFs work.
Write articles profiles website content newsletters and social media posts.
Translate complex community initiatives into accessible and engaging narratives.
Produce materials to promote BCF campaigns programs events and community initiatives.
Generate and keep up-to-date materials that support fund holders and donor services.
Collaborate with photographers videographers and designers to bring stories to life.
Help protect the authenticity of BCF communications as AI reshapes the media landscape informing BCF guidelines for AI use.
Use inclusive language and storytelling that reflect diverse voices and perspectives.
Activate multiple channels
Manage social media channels and digital storytelling.
Support media outreach and relationships with local journalists.
Help develop communications plans for campaigns and initiatives.
Contribute to podcasts events and emerging storytelling formats.
Ensure website content and structure is fresh up-to-date and easy to navigate.
Provide strategic leadership
Help ensure that communicating with our stakeholders and audiences is core to our work.
Provide direction on brand building activities.
Develop communications plans to expand reach and deepen engagement.
Work closely with the BCF team to support the communications needs of different operational areas in alignment with our strategic goals.
Manage the communications annual budget.
General
As part of the BCF team attend regular team meetings and help to create a welcoming and supportive presence in community.
Other ad hoc tasks and projects as mutually agreed to from time to time.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
68 years of experience in communications journalism media or agency environments.
Clear and compelling writing skills across multiple formats with the ability to recognize and interpret both critical and subtle nuances in messaging.
Experience with strategic communications planning and brand building.
A strong ability to develop and produce compelling stories and other content for digital channels reports and publications and marketing materials.
Data informed decision-making skills used to shape content and measure communication effectiveness.
Proficiency with tools such as Mailchimp Constant Contact Canva WordPress and other content platforms.
Experience in collaborating with designers photographers and other creative partners.
Confidence and creativity in managing social media and digital storytelling platforms including Facebook Instagram (Meta Business Suite) and LinkedIn.
Independent working skills with the ability to set priorities and balance multiple projects and deadlines.
Experience in providing communications support to functional areas of an organization.
A genuine interest in community impact philanthropy and nonprofit work.
Professionalism and care when handling sensitive topics including responding to communication challenges or crises.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
This 20-25 hour per week position is based at the BCF offices in Banff Alberta with flexibility to work remotely. The office environment is open concept. General office hours: 9 - 2pm Monday to Thursday/Friday with some evenings required to accommodate events. Ideal start-date is early June. Compensation range: $annually plus benefits.
