Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I position within the Division 9 Traffic Services Unit located in Forsyth County. This Position will supervise and direct traffic signing operations within Division 9. Position responsibilities include but are not limited to: planning work for assigned crews monitor expenditures fabricate signs maintain inventory and inventory records investigate public complaints plan and supervise installation of emergency detours in accordance with NCDOT Specifications perform field inspections at worksites and facilities assist with safety meeting planning and administration ensure all equipment is maintained and serviced coordinate activities with other work units train and counsel employees conduct performance reviews and assist with recruitment process for potential new employees. Position will require working knowledge of various computer systems such as Microsoft Office sign fabrication programs MMS and SAP. Work may include special assignments outside of normal working addition this position will be subject to 24-hour emergency response for the repairs of damaged regulatory signs installation/maintenance of emergency detours and snow & ice removal. Additional Expectations:

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety-toed shoes required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Safety-toed shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC14 $52592 - $92036

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in sign design layout and fabrication
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a crew
  • Experience operating a sign truck with attachments
  • Knowledge in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience in record keeping such as tracking employees and equipment time and recording quantities of material used

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
