About Combat Veterans of America

Combat Veterans of America (CVOA) is a federally recognized 501(c)(19) Veterans Service Organization dedicated exclusively to those who served in harms way. CVOA also operates a 501(c)(3) foundation through which it advances its philanthropic mission including support advocacy and programming for combat veterans and their families across the country.


The National Command Council (NCC) serves as the governing and strategic leadership body of CVOA. Its members are entrusted with guiding the organizations legislative agenda federal engagement capital planning and long-term structural growth nationwide.


The Opportunity

CVOA is seeking a mission-aligned combat veteran with demonstrated experience in fundraising philanthropic strategy and nonprofit capital development to join the National Command Council. This appointment represents a unique opportunity to shape the financial future of an organization serving Americas combat veterans at the national level.


The selected Council Member will serve as a strategic advisor and advocate for CVOAs development function working alongside fellow Council Members to advance the organizations fundraising capacity donor relationships and long-term financial sustainability.


Primary Responsibilities

Fundraising and Philanthropic Development

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to CVOA leadership on fundraising strategy donor cultivation and philanthropic planning.

  • Assist in identifying qualifying and stewarding major donor relationships and institutional funding sources.

  • Provide guidance on capital campaign design grant strategy and planned giving programs.

  • Help establish fundraising benchmarks reporting frameworks and accountability structures.

  • Leverage personal and professional networks to expand CVOAs donor base and funding pipeline.


Governance and Strategic Leadership

  • Participate in National Command Council meetings and contribute to high-level organizational decision-making.

  • Advise on veteran legislation federal engagement strategies and policy priorities aligned with CVOAs mission.

  • Support long-term capital planning and financial sustainability of both the VSO and Foundation entities.

  • Contribute to the Councils work on structural expansion efforts across the country.

  • Serve as an ambassador for CVOAs mission within your professional and veteran community networks.

Requirements

Ideal Candidate Profile

CVOA is seeking a proven leader who brings both the credibility of combat service and the expertise of nonprofit fundraising or philanthropic leadership. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:


  • Meaningful experience in nonprofit fundraising development or philanthropic strategy including direct involvement with major gift campaigns capital campaigns grant writing or planned giving.

  • A track record of building and maintaining donor relationships at the individual corporate or foundation level.

  • Familiarity with nonprofit governance board service or advisory roles within a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) framework.

  • Understanding of the veteran-serving nonprofit landscape and the unique funding dynamics within it.

  • Demonstrated leadership strategic thinking and the ability to contribute meaningfully within a collegial volunteer governance structure.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to represent CVOA with credibility and integrity.

  • Documentation of combat eligibility (DD-214 or equivalent) will be required prior to appointment.
