QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma GED or HiSet
Pharmacy Technician License for State of Massachusetts (required)
PTCB - National Certificationis required for Acute Care (required)
Previous pharmacy technician experience (required)

Summary:
Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist Pharmacy technicians assist in various activities of the pharmacy department. Through the leadership of the operations leadership team the pharmacy technician is responsible for the essential functions and responsibilities outlined in this document noting every employee is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Leadership has the right to change or add to the job responsibilities based on changes in workflows or processes as necessary.
The employee is expected to:
Obtain and maintain appropriate knowledge and understanding of Baystate Medical Center/Baystate Health (BH) Pharmacy Services. This knowledge includes the values policies and procedures of BMC/BH and BH Pharmacy Services. The incumbent serves as a representative of the department both inside and outside the Pharmacy and Hospital and must adhere to system and department compliance policies any applicable laws and regulations and the Baystate Operating Principles.
The certified pharmacy technician I am responsible for supporting dispensing and restocking functions from the central pharmacy to patient care OR and procedural areas utilizing automated inventory dispensing machines (e.g. carousel) and cabinets (e.g. Pyxis/Anesthesia Pyxis machines) as well as various medication trays and carts and essential non-sterile compounding (USP 795) tasks.

Job Responsibilities:
1)Distributive Pharmacy Services:
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of a Central Pharmacy and distributive pharmacy technicians duties and responsibilities. This includes but is not limited to:
Operates all pharmacy automation and technology in accordance with policy procedures and manufacturing instructions to support inventory management drug preparation and dispensing processes across all medication storage locations (patient care units ORs procedural areas trays kits code carts etc.)
Demonstrates proficiency in the management and distribution of all trays and kits prepared/managed by the pharmacy
Demonstrates proficiency in general non-sterile compounding procedures (compounding oral liquids packaging oral solids and all labeling and documentation as required for dispensing)
Assists the purchasing staff with functions related to drug purchasing and inventory control as needed.
2)Dedication to Quality/Safety
Understands the BH pharmacy locations and shifts and is familiar with the expectations of the technician role and various specialty areas/roles.
Maintains a working knowledge of medication error prevention methods and handling/preparation techniques for high-risk or high-alert medications including LASA medications
Participates in the Unit Inspection process to ensure medication storage areas meet regular requirements and medication inventory is accurate and appropriate for use.
Participates in medication/safety event reporting and resolutions as appropriate.
3)Customer Service & Teamwork:
Interacts effectively with other members of the department and health care team regularly.
Maintains attentiveness to the rights of patients. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
Triages orders determine priorities processes orders and notify the pharmacist as appropriate.
Communicates effectively with the team and external colleagues. This includes receiving/referring incoming calls to the department that handles the pharmacy window.
4) Participates in the BH staff development program - Performance Evaluation (PE) and works to meet departmental professional and personal goals
5) Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees as needed
6) Employee is aware of and follows BH attendance policy

Typically a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidates relevant experience.
