POSITION DETAILS:
The Department of Academic Affairs and Physical Education at Pomona College invites applications for an Assistant Professor/Director of Sports Medicine to begin in summer 2026. The Director provides overall leadership and day-to-day management for the Athletic Training and Sports Performance units within the Department of Physical Education and Athletics. This role carries full supervisory responsibility for all Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance staff members and oversees the operations of both the Athletic Training Room and the Athletic Performance Center. The Director works in close partnership with faculty and staff coaches across all 21 varsity athletic programs and reports to the Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Director.
The Director will expand the curriculum by teaching Physical Education courses in health-related areas and providing internship opportunities for students interested in the Health Sciences and Sports Performance fields. As a member of the Department of Physical Education senior administrative team the Director plays a meaningful role in shaping the direction of the department by contributing to major decisions informing long-range planning and helping develop and execute the strategic vision for both Pomona College Physical Education and Pomona-Pitzer Athletics. This position carries a coterminous faculty appointment in the Department of Physical Education with teaching expectations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Chair of Physical Education and Director of Athletics the Director works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
- Directs all aspects of Athletic Training Room and Athletic Performance Center. The Director works to ensure that all department curricular offerings specifically Varsity Athletics are safe learning and growth environments and comply NCAA rules.
- Provide overall leadership and manage the full-time staff of the Athletic Training Room and Athletic Performance Center including hiring training and performance development. Oversees the scheduling and coordination of staff assignments for coverage of team practices and competitions.
- Maintain effective communication and relationships necessary to provide leadership direction and education to the Department of Physical Education and Athletics in the areas of health medical clearance safety and injury prevention injury recognition emergency response compliance with treatment programs athletic performance and overall scheduling for varsity athletic teams.
- Develops policies procedures and manages delivery of sports medicine and athletic performance services including testing evaluation treatment of injuries rehabilitation and medical referrals.
- Manages athletic training facility including budgets equipment supplies inventory purchasing maintenance replacement and repair.
- Manages the coordination and communication of services with staff for injured student-athletes advises coaches daily on medical status of injured student-athletes and makes determination of ability for student-athletes to practice and compete.
- Teaches courses in the Department of Physical Education in the area of Athletic Training and will oversee Independent Studies in the field of Athletic Training.
- Reviews evaluates and recommends techniques and equipment that enhance the Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance unit. Provides vision and leadership to keep these areas up to date.
- Serves as the primary athletic trainer for specific varsity teams.
- Maintains the Departments important professional connections to the local medical community and provides instruction to fellows/residents of local medical facilities.
- Monitors and verifies certifications and continuing education for all Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance staff.
- Serves as the department liaison to the SCIAC Athletic Trainers and NCAA on Sports Medicine and Athletic performance related topics. Serves on Pomona College SCIAC and NCAA committees as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Masters Degree in Athletic Training Sports Medicine Kinesiology or a related field. Candidates must have earned the degree by the start date.
- Licenses/Certificates: Certification from National Athletic Trainers Association of Certification (NATABOC) required. CPR/AED (or ability to obtain prior to the start date).
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in sports medicine and collegiate athletic training including demonstrated supervisory or leadership responsibility.
- Valid Drivers License
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- NSCA CSCS certification
- Leadership or supervisory experience at an academic institution.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge skills and abilities not listed below.
- Deploy professional skills in Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the Colleges strategic interests.
- Must understand and communicate the mission and history of the Colleges liberal arts environment.
- Demonstrate effective accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal written interpersonal reading and leadership skills to supervise facilitate motivate and inspire a diverse group of employees student employees temporary workers contract employees. Must also assist and communicate well with parents students alumni volunteers community partners and other possible stakeholders.
- Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word Excel Outlook) and associated professional software. Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology/devices/equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
- Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience discretion good judgment courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and across the campus community.
- Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks meet deadlines/timelines respond to others in a timely manner and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics in support of the Colleges strategic vision and the Department of Physical Educations and Athletics core values.
- Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
- Operate the Colleges vehicles safely for campus-related work.
- Knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA requirements.
- Knowledge of NCAA health and safety-related requirements and keeping current with NCAA legislation.
ADDITIONAL POSITIONAL DETAILS: Regular full-time exempt position. Annual Salary: $90000-$115000. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to and individual will include but not be limited to: education training relevant prior experience and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of athletic teams and of student-athletes balancing their academic schedules. Holiday evening and weekend hours are required. Travel may be required.
