Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as an Environmental Engineer 3 in our Environmental Health Programs including Lead and Asbestos compliance. Travels to independently perform detailed engineering surveys review assessments and assists in performing technical review planning and directing the enforcement of laws and regulations to provide safe and sanitary conditions for environmental contaminant removals. Conducts non-routine investigations in response to complaints contamination or illness.

  • Under direction of the Regional Supervisor independently performs detailed engineering surveys and source water assessments.
  • Travels to perform detailed engineering review and surveys original inventory and licensure inspections plan revies and specification for new construction and major alterations and extensions for Office of Health Protection engineering programs.
  • Confers with regulated entities and the general public explaining deficiencies and sanitation practices.
  • Assists program manager with preparing detailed technical reports of field inspections and investigations.
  • Attends and completes mandatory knowledgebased and practical training required by the Office of Health Protection standard operating procedure and program requirements for regional program activities.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college with a bachelors degree in engineering and coursework in sanitary public health or environmental engineering.
  • Requires two (2) years of professional experience in the practice of environmental engineering sanitary engineering or public health engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience applying state Laws and Department rules and regulations policies and procedures as they relate to environmental health programs to the general public public officials local health departments and other local groups.
  • Two (2) years of experience writing and reviewing inspection reports and technical documents.
  • Two (2) years of experience using environmental sampling equipment.
  • Two (2) years of experience communicating directly with the public and regulated entities.
  • Two (2) years of experience preparing and/or reviewing evidence for court proceedings and providing testimony.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in Microsoft software products including Word Excel PowerPoint etc.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires possession of a valid drivers license.
  • Requires use of personal vehicle for extensive workrelated travel within the State.
