Job Summary
Student Advisor (Grant Funded)
Highland Community College is seeking a dedicated and student-focused Student Advisor to support participants in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. This grant-funded full-time position plays an essential role in promoting student persistence academic success and transfer readiness. The position will continue contingent upon ongoing grant funding.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise students and prospective students on course selection degree planning transfer pathways and career exploration.
- Assist students in setting and achieving personal educational and career goals.
- Develop individualized academic plans that reflect each students goals academic history and needs.
- Support students with course selection and academic skill development.
- Assist with participant assessment intake and eligibility documentation.
- Review and approve transcripts; conduct degree compliance checks as needed.
- Work with students of diverse academic skill levels including those transitioning from GED or developmental coursework.
- Coordinate articulation and transfer functions in collaboration with other Advisors faculty and staff.
- Lead or support transfer initiatives including arranging and facilitating college visits.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date articulation information including IAI codes.
- Communicate transfer opportunities and pathways to students.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of program services webpages and related online resources.
- Monitor student progress in reading writing and math; provide or refer students for skill-building support.
- Develop and teach academic skills workshops seminars and courses for program participants.
- Work with TRIO staff to create individualized academic success plans for high-risk students.
- Serve as a liaison between students and faculty.
- Assist with the tutor/mentor program including facilitating monthly mentorship training sessions.
- Advocate for students and help connect them to campus and community resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Were Looking For
Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree in education counseling student personnel or a related field required.
- Masters degree preferred.
- Three (3) years of experience in student advising or youth/student programming OR a combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and skills.
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of advising practices degree requirements and transfer processes.
- Understanding of college academic programs student services and articulation policies.
- Familiarity with the needs and barriers of first-generation low-income disabled and underserved students.
- Strong ability to assess student interests abilities and academic history.
- Experience providing tutoring or specialized instruction.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to build strong supportive relationships with diverse populations.
- Proficiency in computer applications and data-informed decision-making.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention and community resources.
- Understanding of FERPA and other applicable privacy laws.
