Job Summary

Job Title: Principal

Location: Lugo-McGinness Academy

Reports to:Superintendent

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

Lugo-McGinness Academy is a small non-traditional academic program that serves Charlottesville City Schools students in grades 8-12. Students may self-select or be referred for admission to the program. The Principal is responsible for providing leadership for the staff and students of the program in the development implementation and evaluation of Lugo-McGinness Academy and administering the program in accordance with school board policies and administrative regulations.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the overall program including student achievement school climate instruction and personnel supervision
  • Support students social and emotional needs through the implementation of school-wide trauma-informed best practices
  • Support and guide School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports across the program
  • Collaborate with the Charlottesville High School and Charlottesville Middle School administrative teams to identify students in need of alternative program support
  • Collaborate with the school counselors to review transcripts and develop a plan for graduation
  • Lead program teams in creating individual plans created to meet student needs and progress and monitor student success
  • Provide guidance and leadership in curriculum review and design to include equity of content for students
  • Organize professional learning for staff that supports program goals including trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the program by monitoring student progress behavior data and student achievement
  • Collaborate with outside agencies that provide interventions and support for students enrolled in the program
  • Attend meetings and training needed to maintain and upgrade leadership abilities
  • Practice necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities
  • Maintain accurate complete and correct records as required by law division policy and administration regulations
  • Promote literacy and reading throughout the program for the purpose of enhancing the literacy of the students enrolled in the program
  • Participate with division committees and professional learning to increase strategies for instructional practices in education such as instructional technology
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the program.

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

Perform multiple technical tasks with a potential need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects preparing and maintaining accurate records; ability to perform algebra and/or geometry; compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; ability to schedule activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; flexibility to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals and data; possess independent problem solving to analyze issues interpret guidelines and create action plans; ability to work with constant and sustained interruptions maintaining confidentiality communicating with diverse groups meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; knowledge of best instructional practices; ability to assist staff in acquiring best practices and assisting to implement the practices knowledge of trauma-informed practices School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and culturally responsiveness

Education and/or Experience:

A Masters Degree in School Administration or a related field teaching experience and aVirginia administrative license is required. Previous administrative experience in the area of alternative education is preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

The usual and customary methods of performing the functions of this position require these physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; frequent stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for monitoring and determining needs. Generally the job requires 50% sitting 25% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard-free environment.

This position is evaluated by the Superintendent.
