Senior Technical Supervisor (On-Site)
Job Summary
The Radiological Control Division provides radiological expertise through field-deployed technical personnel. It maintains an accredited personnel monitoring service an instrumentation and calibration facility and expertise in radiological engineering and nuclear materials management.
The Instrumentation and Calibration Group Leader manages the Laboratorys radiological instrumentation and calibration program serving as the technical authority for instrument selection calibration testing troubleshooting and lifecycle management.
This role ensures all radiological instruments meet DOE requirements accreditation standards and performance expectations. The Group Leader also leads technical staff and supports Laboratory-wide instrumentation initiatives reporting to the Radiological Control Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Leadership and Program Oversight
Lead and manage the Laboratorys radiological instrumentation and calibration program.
Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for radiological monitoring instrumentation and associated calibration standards.
Ensure compliance with DOE-STDrequirements for instrumentation performance calibration testing and maintenance .
Maintain calibration traceability to NIST standards and ensure adherence to ANSI N323A and applicable DOE technical standards.
Oversee DOELAP-related external dosimetry instrument support requirements consistent with DOE-STDguidance .
Establish and maintain technical basis documentation for calibration methodologies and performance testing.
Evaluate and approve new instrumentation for Laboratory use.
Develop and implement calibration intervals consistent with regulatory and operational risk.
Ensure operability testing and documentation of area radiation monitors contamination monitors air sampling systems and electronic dosimetry systems.
Provide technical support for abnormal radiological conditions instrument failures and emergency response scenarios.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise Instrumentation & Calibration Technicians and technical support personnel.
Assign work based on risk complexity and staff qualifications.
Ensure staff are trained qualified and proficient in calibration and repair techniques.
Review all technical staff calibration data.
Conduct performance evaluations and provide professional development guidance.
Support oral board preparation and qualification processes where applicable.
Ensure effective work planning and control in accordance with Integrated Safety Management principles.
Program Management and Compliance
Develop and maintain procedures governing instrument calibration maintenance inspection and performance testing.
Prepare for and interface with DOE internal audit and regulatory assessments.
Monitor and trend instrumentation program performance metrics.
Participate in corrective action investigations and implement preventive measures.
Support Work Planning and Control reviews involving radiological instrumentation hazards.
Participate in design reviews for new facilities and modifications to ensure proper radiological monitoring capability.
Manage calibration facility equipment standards and reference sources.
Ensure compliance with applicable DOE Orders 10 CFR 835 and Laboratory policies.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field fourteen (14) years of related work experience including at least five (5) years as a Technical Project Supervisor or equivalent with demonstrated technical leadership.
Candidates are expected to have at least five (5) years of experience in their current classification or equivalent role.
Demonstrated experience implementing DOE radiological protection standards and federal regulations (10 CFR 835).
Extensive experience with contamination monitors area radiation monitors electronic dosimeters air sampling systems and specialty radiological instrumentation.
Experience supervising technical staff.
Demonstrated knowledge of ANSI N323A DOE-STDinstrumentation requirements and DOE-STDcompetency expectations .
Strong troubleshooting skills in analog and digital electronics.
An understanding of radiation detector theory and the ability to troubleshoot radiation detection systems to the component level.
Excellent interpersonal written and oral communication skills.
Ability to function as technical authority within the Radiological Control.
Management System framework .
Must be qualified or be able to qualify as an Electrical Equipment Inspector.
Must be qualified or able to qualify as Operations & Experimental Work Control Coordinator.
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Certification as a National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT).
Experience with configuration management and technical authority roles .
Experience supporting emergency response instrumentation systems.
Additional Information:
This is a fully onsite position located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton NY.

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
