Job Summary

Position Description:Position SummaryThe National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious research and development organization that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. Associated Universities Inc. (AUI) is a nonprofit organization that manages and operates the NRAO under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. The Observatory is a hub for technological and scientific collaboration operating state-of-the-art radio telescope facilities for use by the international scientific community. The Observatory has been instrumental in the study of black holes galaxies and the early NRAO we are recruiting a Network Administrator to Provide networking infrastructure support for The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) operations. The Network Administrator will report to the Network Services Manager. Help administer troubleshoot and upgrade the networks across the NRAO as well as communicate and troubleshoot the internet connection to Internet-2 through local preferred location for the position will be based at the headquarters in Charlottesville You Will be Doing:Developing and maintaining relationships with internet service providers in order to troubleshoot outages as well as open and escalate outage tickets;Implementing processes to maximize network performance by monitoring troubleshooting network problems and managing the timely resolution of outages;Monitoring measuring and improving performance and resiliency of the GBO intranet including high-speed data links within the data center;Procuring and configuring network hardware for infrastructure upgrades;Writing technical support documentation for network systems and applications;Installing and connecting network and server hardware within the NRAO data centers;Planning and coordinating network maintenance activities around telescope observing schedules;Provide remote support for other NRAO sites including Charlottesville Virginia and Socorro New Mexico;Participating in cross-training the network support personnel at all of the NRAO sites to foster collaboration enhance skill sets and promote knowledge compliance with organizational and government safety policies and procedures in work area is duties as EnvironmentWork is mission driven team oriented and typically performed in an office setting within a research or development You Are:EducationAssociates degree in computer science engineering or related field or an equivalent amount of education and and CompetenciesStrong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize network administrative to investigate document and address the current needs and technical demands of Observatory science and business operations. Service-focused approach to understanding and serving the needs of the end written and verbal communication skills particularly the ability to communicate with staff who are not technically teamwork skills and the ability to feel comfortable working with geographically distributed and international teamsComprehensive knowledge of networking concepts and computing level of competency in Microsoft software products and web-based systems Visio and to detail is criticalAdditional RequirementWhile performing the duties of this job the employee frequently sits at a desk uses a personal computer telephone and other standard office equipment; the ability to climb stairs is required. The employee is required to bend reach and must have finger dexterity. The employee will be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision color vision and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in employees must be authorized to work in the United States.
