About Us Mō mātou

The Engagement Data and Innovation group within the Regulatory and Identity Services branch plays a key role in advancing branch priorities by developing new products services and operational policy and by delivering expertise across operational policy market services product strategy and innovation design and content and data analytics.

The Business Insights team is a core data analytics capability within the branch. Made up of data engineers analysts dashboard developers and data scientists the team works across the full data lifecycle from data sourcing and modelling to advanced analytics and insight delivery. We deliver highquality data marts business intelligence products and advanced statistical analysis that generate actionable insights to inform and influence operational and policy decisionmaking.

The role Te tūnga

Reporting to Manager Business Insights this is an exciting role that will be responsible for developing and promoting best data engineering practices establishing data models and architecture and developing and maintaining data pipelines. The objective is to enable and scale advanced data solutions to support decision-making promote a data-driven culture and make a difference to the essential services we provide for Aotearoa. This is an ideal opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer / Data Warehouse Developer who is a trusted expert capable of working with a range of stakeholders and excited about improving data engineering practice:

  • Designing developing and deploying data pipelines from a range of structured and unstructured sources into Azure Data Lake and data marts
  • Developing and implementing data models including dimensional modelling for BI and analytics use cases
  • Documenting pipelines and data lineage and establishing data quality and governance frameworks
  • Supporting and maintaining our analytics tech ecosystem including ETL and BI tooling
  • Integrating the BI environment with third-party tools to enable advanced analytics including predictive and machine learning capabilities
  • Working closely with analysts data scientists and business stakeholders to ensure datasets are fit for purpose and well understood
  • Mentoring team members and actively lifting the engineering practice across the team

What you bring Nōu te rourou

We are looking for someone who has a passion for data analytics has great communications and people skills is customer-focused and willing to work in a collaborative and fast-moving environment:

  • 7-10 years of experience in data engineering or a closely related data role
  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure services particularly Data Factory SQL Server Azure DevOps and the broader Azure Data Platform
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Fabric Power BI or Synapse
  • Experience with a range of data formats and sources including Parquet XML JSON and API extraction
  • Strong grasp of data warehousing concepts and dimensional modelling
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to translate technical complexity for non-technical audiences
  • Experience leading complex projects and working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Desirable:Data architecture experience Python skills experience with SAS EG or SAS Viya familiarity with agile ways of working. A tertiary qualification in IT Information Systems or a related field.
