We are seeking a full-time 40-hour Orthopedic Technician to join our Orthopedics/Sports Medicine team on-site Monday through Friday from 8:30am5:00pm. This on-site role is located in our convenient Ambulatory Care Center at 978 Worcester Street in Wellesley MA. Medical Assistants with an orthopedic background who are interested in learning Orthopedic Tech responsibilities and expanding their skill set are strongly encouraged to explore this opportunity!
Our team of Orthopedic surgeons nonoperative sports medicine doctors and PAs with expertise in shoulder knee and other activity-related injuries treat a large volume of patients of all ages and skill levels. We offer a full range of services tailored to the needs of athletes at all levels including high school college professional athletes and weekend/recreational athletes. The Sports Medicine Service provides fast effective and highly adaptable treatment plans with patient goals at the center.
Our Ortho Tech/Medical Assistant will partner closely with physicians advanced practice providers physical therapists and fellow medical assistants in the care and treatment of patients with orthopedic needs.
Responsibilities include:
- Applying and removing casts and fitting splints and braces for fractures sprains and positioning under the direction of Physicians and Physician Assistants.
- Ordering orthopedic and patient care supplies for the Cast Clinic ensuring appropriate stocking fitting and availability of braces slings traction and other orthopedic equipment.
- Distributing setting up and fitting orthopedic equipment and providing education to patients and staff.
- Assisting with the training of Medical Assistants in the setup and fitting of orthopedic durable medical equipment to ensure coverage when Orthopedic Technicians are not available.
- Collaborating with Orthopedic Physician Assistants and Medical Assistants to support cast clinic scheduling and coordinate daily and weekly operational needs with the Lead Orthopedic Technician and practice leadership.
- Maintaining orthopedic equipment inventory and ensuring accurate charging for supplies equipment and services.
- Applying assistive device fittings and providing gait instruction for crutches canes walkers platform attachments and related devices.

Essential Functions
-Set up and apply traction in accordance with standard procedures and instructions.
-Assist with the application of casts braces and prostheses. Requisition store and dispense supplies as directed.
-Inspect and maintain orthopedic equipment.
-Instruct selected patients in cast care simple exercises and crutch or cane use. Apply sterile and non-sterile dressings.
-Make splints slings and foot pieces.
-May make rounds with doctors of all orthopedic patients and carry out instructions.
-Cut and fashion devices from metal plastic leather and wood using equipment and hand tools.

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Licenses and Credentials
Basic Life Support BLS Certification - preferred
Orthopaedic Technologist Certification OTC National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists Inc. preferred
Experience
2-3 years related patient care experience required
0-1 year experience in orthopedics preferred
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
- Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
- Communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
- Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
- Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

The ideal candidate is a certified Ortho Tech with experience. However this role offers a unique opportunity for Medical Assistants with orthopedic experience to grow their careers through handson training mentorship and crosstraining across orthopedic services developing advanced skills in casting brace fitting orthopedic equipment support and broader Orthopedic Technician responsibilities.
