Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.The employee in this position will function as a Transportation Supervisor I for the Perquimans County Maintenance unit based out of Hertford NC. The employee will be required to work in diverse working environments performing various general maintenance operations. The employee will be responsible for supervising a roadway maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic near heavy equipment and with power tools. The employee must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of a roadway maintenance crew that is involved in pavement patching drainage maintenance shoulder repair paved and unpaved roadway maintenance vegetation management snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. The employee is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Safety toe shoes will be needed.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews but prior to offering a position.
Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:
No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
Valid current North Carolina drivers license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current valid appropriate drivers license from their state of residence.)
If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state drivers license in the past ten years the drivers record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state drivers license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC14 - $52592 - $92036
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in road maintenance and repair; as well as maintenance equipment operations
- Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations
- Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
- Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation asphalt patching snow and ice removal crack sealing full depth patching or pothole patching
- Experience in planning and organizing work
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
