Position Overview

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire an Educator for the Alton Mental Health Center located in Alton Illinois to teach regularly scheduled treatment-based educational classes. Requires incumbent to be able to assess educational levels and need of referred patients from the forensic program. Writes teaching outline and plans curricula treatment-based education classes for referred forensic patients who may be mentally ill and/or intellectually disabled for education programs to meet their identified needs. Confers with treatment team on patient needs and progress in referred programs. Instructs para and non-professional staff in their delivery of educational and/or living skills programs. Maintains required records documentation and statistics.

Essential Functions

  • Teaches regularly scheduled treatment-based educational classes assesses educational levels to meet identified patient needs from the forensic program.
  • Writes patient progress reports and program reports.
  • As part of a treatment team identifies options for best practice treatment interventions in lieu of restraints/seclusions.
  • Links discharged patients to educational programs at area public schools and community colleges providing information on classes and counselor contact.
  • Orders and stocks materials and equipment needed for areas of instruction.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires possession of a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) issued Professional Educator License (PEL) with endorsement in special education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of professional experience preparing and teaching adult-level special education and vocational/habilitation instruction for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience assessing vocational and academic skills knowledge and abilities using standardized tools (i.e. achievement tests and vocational diagnostics) for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience preparing and maintaining detailed educational/vocational documentation consistent with federal state and accreditation standards.
  • Two (2) years of basic proficiency in software applications such as Microsoft Word Excel the development of reports records etc.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment including personal computers.
  • Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patients or others.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to pass Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Requires the ability to access various work sites throughout the hospital and the ability to respond to facility-wide emergencies.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry moderate loads up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
