The Centre for Population Health Sciences at the Usher Institute within The University of Edinburgh is looking to appoint three SCREDS Clinical Lecturers in General Practice & Primary Care.

The Opportunity:

Suitable applicants must already hold a national training number (NTN) in General Practice at the time of applying and will be due to enter General Practice ST3 in August 2026 or February 2027 (or flexible dates if working less than full-time). The successful candidates will be appointed at the level of Specialist/Specialty Registrar and will be in the Scottish Training Programme in General Practice.

Clinical training is an essential component of the Lectureship in order to ensure the appointees can successfully complete their CCST.

Training will also be offered in general practice primary care and health services research methods and medical education. Other specialist training opportunities are available within the Institute including exposure to public health.

The successful applicants will complete their training splitting their final year (ST3) over two years working part time (50%) in clinical training in a suitable practice and part time (50%) in academic training in the University Department. The successful applicants must already have a Scottish national training number (NTN) in general practice at the time of taking up the post and must take up the post at the start of GPST3

During the term of the post the successful candidates are expected to achieve the competencies required to achieve their CCST in general practice and to gain either: (1) Clinical research competencies and undertake publishable research that will make them well placed to commence a higher degree (PhD or MD) by obtaining an externally funded fellowship by the end of the term of appointment; or (2) Medical Education competencies including formal training in medical education methods and undertaking educational research making them well-placed to apply for post-CCT educational fellowships.

For those interested in a clinical research career then ideally you will have research experience (although not essential). For those interested in a medical education career then ideally you will have previous experience of the design delivery and evaluation of clinical education or medical education research (although not essential). For both career paths you will have the capacity for innovative and original thinking have ability to exercise a high degree of personal initiative in organising own work and work to tight deadlines calmly and efficiently. This post is funded for two years and is an excellent opportunity for you to develop an academic strand to your career. Applications will be subject to successful negotiation with the clinical training practice to which the trainee is due to be attached in GPST3.

Your skills and attributes for success:
Starting GPST3 in August 2026 or February 2027 (or flexible if less than full-time).
Must already have a Scottish national training number (NTN) in general practice at the time of taking up the post and must take up the post at the start of GPST3.
Capacity for innovative and original thinking & motivation to deliver high-quality research or medical education.
Capacity to be a future clinical academic leader in research and/or medical education.
Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams.
Ideally some experience of research or education and of publication/presentation of research.
