POSITION OVERVIEW
Founded in 1946 Cal Voices is one of the oldest peer-run grassroots behavioral health advocacy agencies in California and is an affiliate of Mental Health America. Cal Voices is a 501(c)(3) public benefit organization dedicated to improving the lives of residents in the diverse communities of California through advocacy education research and culturally-relevant peer support all its programs Cal Voices works with individuals and families experiencing behavioral health challenges to promote wellness and recovery prevention and improved access to services and supports. With statewide regional and local programs in Amador Placer and Sacramento Counties Cal Voices regularly employs around 55 positions over 90% of which are designated peer roles that require personal lived experience as a consumer of behavioral health services or as a family member parent/caregiver or primary support person of someone with complex behavioral health needs. The agencys average annual revenue for the past six fiscal years is approximately $5.5 million.
The Executive Director is in charge of Cal Voices strategic vision and leading organizational decisions to ensure stability and drive growth. Duties include collaborating with Cal Voices Board of Directors supervising members of the agencys Executive Leadership team implementing strategic plans for the agencys development overseeing day-to-day operations grant writing and business development and managing relationships with funders and stakeholders. The Executive Director must be ethical analytical agile thorough self-driven pragmatic and an excellent communicator with outstanding emotional intelligence and business sense. Reliability accuracy professionalism critical thinking and a strong work ethic are all required. This is a fast-paced work environment where new tasks unexpectedly arise and priorities frequently shift so advanced organizational skills personal flexibility internal motivation and a sense of humor are also essential.
Cal Voices is a consumer-run organization. The agencys entire Executive Leadership team and at least 51% of its Board of Directors and employees must be individuals living with a behavioral health condition. As such the Executive Director must have personal lived experience of recovery from a mental illness and/or substance use disorder. The Executive Director must possess a thorough understanding of Californias Public Behavioral Health System (PBHS) the Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA) statewide Behavioral Health Transformation initiatives Californias Medi-Cal system and public behavioral health funding sources and services delivery structures and key actors and entities that influence behavioral health policy and services implementation throughout the state. This position requires extensive experience analyzing legislation and public policy conducting state and local advocacy writing funding proposals and applications and managing nonprofit business operations. The Executive Director must also demonstrate strong alignment with the Consumer Movement self-help and recovery principles and peer support and consumer employment issues. Qualified individuals who have received public behavioral health services in any California county are bilingual/bicultural and/or identify as members of traditionally underserved populations (e.g. BIPOC LGBTQ veterans immigrants/refugees former foster youth experience with homelessness or the criminal justice system etc.) are strongly desired.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Personal lived experience of recovery from a mental illness and/or substance use disorder
- Alignment with Cal Voices organizational values and positions on key policy issues
- Credibility with behavioral health consumers and individuals from diverse/traditionally marginalized communities
- A Juris Doctor or a masters degree in nonprofit public or business administration; management; government; public policy; or similar field related to Cal Voices mission and operations
- At least five years of professional work experience performing all or most of the duties of this position as the Executive Director Chief Executive Officer or senior manager of a nonprofit agency with at least 50 employees and annual budget of at least $4 million
- Familiarity with the structure and functions of Californias Public Behavioral Health System the Recovery Model and Peer Support Services
- A current and valid Class C California Driver License
- Immediate access to reliable personal transportation throughout the workday
- Auto insurance coverage that meets the minimum legal requirements in California
- Ability to perform all Job Duties for this position with or without a reasonable accommodation

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Although not guaranteed future pay increases may be given based on revenue growth demonstrated skills quality of work performance and/or value of the employees contributions to the agency.
Starting Compensation:$180000 /year
