About the College of Environmental Design
The mission of the College of Environmental Design (ENV) is to provide outstanding academic and professional learning experiences within an interdisciplinary structure. Creative excellence environmental sustainability and social responsibility have guided ENVs programs since it was established in 1970. Moving forward ENV is strengthening its emphasis on thematic clusters addressing environmental sustainability regeneration and resilience; health and wellness; and cultural preservation.
Our award-winning programs offer professional degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Architecture Landscape Architecture Urban and Regional Planning; at the undergraduate level in Art History and Visual Communication Design; and at the graduate level in Regenerative Studies. About the Department of Landscape Architecture
Cal Poly Pomonas Department of Landscape Architecture was established in 1957 with the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) program. Our Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program established in 1972 has long been recognized for its focus on groundbreaking ecological planning and regenerative design solutions and has just celebrated its 50th year. We cultivate success through a diverse culture of experiential learning discovery and innovation. We demonstrate academic quality relevance and excellence through the teaching learning scholarship and creative activities of our student-centered faculty. We actively engage in interdisciplinary collaborations across the university that firmly align with our mission to advance environmental sustainability regeneration and resilience. This includes long-term partnerships with the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies which was founded by Department of Landscape Architecture Professor Emeritus John T. Lyle in 1994.

The Position
The temporary faculty pool is continuously open and positions are filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be welcome applications from individuals who are experienced and student-centered to teach in the following subject areas:
- Landscape design; landscape construction methods; and/or planting design and ecology
- Computer graphic software including AutoCAD Adobe CS and modeling/rendering programs Rhino Lumion and/or similar software; hand-drafting and sketching methods;
- Climate mitigation resilience and adaptation including related methods practice and technologies;
- Ecosystem sciences such as biology urban ecology plant science and horticulture;
- Earth system science and hazard-resilient design; ecological hydrological and other civil engineering methods and technologies;
- Geospatial technologies such as geo-AI machine learning and environmental sensing;;
- Advanced digital design and communication technologies such as AR/VR digital twins digital fabrication; and/or interdisciplinary research methods.
Responsibilities
Teach assigned division courses in the departments curriculum and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load. Assignments may include day evening and/or weekend courses.
Minimum Qualifications
- A terminal degree in landscape architecture or related discipline relevant to the curriculum; and/or
- CA PLA licensure with a minimum of 5 years of professional practice experience in one of the specific areas of the curriculum; and/or
- a minimum of 10 years of professional practice experience and recognized expertise in one of the specific areas of the curriculum.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in landscape architecture or related discipline
- Prior teaching experience at the college or university level and ability to furnish evidence of strong teaching.
- Research scholarship and/or creative activities related to landscape architecture and related fields as described in the position description.
- Expertise in quantitative research qualitative research and/or effective integration of both.
Salary and Benefit Information
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Initial appointments are for one semester full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
Most new appointees are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank and placed at the beginning of the range. Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications not to exceed $6221 per month. As of July 2024 the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Lecturer A: $5507 - $ 6677
Lecturer B: $6221 - $13224
Lecturer C: $6825 - $14523
Lecturer D: $8593 - $15211
