Job Summary:
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe efficient and compliant operation of the hospitals Class 3 boiler plant and associated mechanical systems. This role oversees plant operations preventive maintenance regulatory compliance and staff supervision to ensure uninterrupted support of critical hospital services.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions
  • Oversee the daily plant operation monitoring and maintenance of the hospital boiler plant ensuring uninterrupted service to all facility systems.
  • Develop manage and maintain boiler plant staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage 24/7 including weekends and holidays.

  • Ensure all regulatory requirements are met including maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation inspection records and testing logs in accordance with local state and federal agencies.

  • Maintain detailed training logs for all boiler plant personnel ensuring compliance with required certifications competencies and ongoing education.

  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs for boilers pumps valves and related mechanical systems.

  • Inspects systems daily such as the Boiler Steam Distribution Chiller and the Condition Return System.

  • Maintains responsibility as supervisor of the Asbestos Program as required.

  • Respond to plant emergencies system failures and alarms ensuring timely resolution and minimal disruption to hospital operations.

  • Work collaboratively with Facilities leadership to support capital planning system upgrades and energy management initiatives.

  • Reviews completed work orders from staff and inspects work completed.

  • Responds appropriately to utility failures.

  • Rotational scheduling participation may be required to ensure continuous operational coverage including evenings weekends holidays and on-call responsibilities as needed

Physical Requirements

Exerts 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Frequently reaches (extending hands and arms in any direction) handles (seizing holding grasping turning or working with hands) and identifies and distinguishes colors. Occasionally climbs (ascends or descends ladders stairs scaffolding ramps poles and the like) balances (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking standing crouching or running on narrow slippery or erratically moving surfaces). Occasionally stoops (bending the body downward and forward by bending at the waist legs and spine) and kneels (bending the legs at knee to come to rest on knee or knees).

Qualifications

Job Requirements
Minimum Education
  • High school vocational or trade school graduate
Minimum Work Experience
  • Three to five years of experience working with boilers and steam-generating equipment.
  • The ability to make repairs meeting exact standards is required.
Minimum Licenses and Certifications
  • Mass Stationary Engineer 3rd Class Engineers License
  • Drivers license required
