Head of Engineering
Job Summary
Join GLS/NXT as our Head of Engineering and take the wheel on one of the most exciting engineering challenges in European logistics.
Were building the next generation of logistics technology - scalable high-traffic products that serve GLS one of Europes largest parcel carriers operating across 40 countries. At GLS/NXT youll work at the intersection of startup speed and enterprise scale - shipping fast owning outcomes end-to-end and leading an engineering organisation that genuinely moves the needle.
This is a role for a leader who earns trust by example: someone who can mentor and grow engineering managers bring rigour to how we build and operate software and be the engineering voice in the room when it matters.
Tasks
People & Organisation
- Lead mentor and develop Engineering Leadership and their teams (30-35 engineers total) creating an environment where people do their best work.
- Own the growth and wellbeing of the engineering org - hiring onboarding performance and retention.
- Be the engineering culture carrier: fostering ownership technical excellence and psychological safety across teams.
Engineering Excellence & Governance
- Establish and continuously improve the standards processes and tooling that enable teams to ship reliable secure and high-quality software at pace.
- Own the engineering governance framework: tech stack decisions cost management security posture and architectural standards.
- Drive cross-team alignment on best practices ensuring consistency without stifling autonomy.
Technical Leadership
- Be a credible technical partner - able to get into the weeds on distributed systems cloud architecture and engineering trade-offs when teams need it.
- Evaluate and guide architectural decisions ensuring our systems scale to meet the demands of high-volume mission-critical logistics operations.
- Stay close to the stack without being in the critical path of delivery.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate closely with Product leadership on roadmap planning - contributing the engineering perspective on feasibility risk and opportunity.
- Act as the bridge between business objectives and engineering execution translating strategy into team-level priorities.
Requirements
Experience
- Proven track record as an Engineering Manager or similar role - ideally in a fast-moving startup or scale-up environment.
- Experience leading and growing engineering teams of 20 people including managing managers.
- Background in building and operating distributed systems at scale with a solid understanding of what it takes to run high-traffic high-availability products in production.
- Hands-on experience with AWS and modern cloud-native architectures.

Technical Depth
- Solid grasp of modern backend engineering: microservices event-driven architectures API design containerisation.
- Comfortable evaluating engineering costs tooling choices and build-vs-buy trade-offs at an organisational level.
- Security and reliability are not afterthoughts for you theyre built in from the start.
