Position Summary

MikmawNative Friendship Centre is centrallylocatedin the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One (1)The Housing & Homelessness Program Coordinator.

This roleis responsible formanaging the intake process for Indigenous individuals and families seeking supportive housing services. This role serves as the first point of contact to accessing MNFC supportive housing opportunities ensuring a welcoming culturally safe and trauma-informed experience while assessing client needs and connecting them to appropriate housing and support services. TheCoordinatorworks collaboratively with community partners and internal teams to promote housing stability and holistic well-being.

Core Responsibilities

Client Intake & Assessment
  • Conduct intake interviews using a culturally safe trauma-informed and strengths-based approach
  • Assess housing needs risks and eligibility forin-housesupportive housing programs
  • Maintainaccurateand confidential client records and documentation
  • Prioritize applicants based on urgency vulnerability and program criteria
Cultural Safety & Relationship Building
  • Create a respectful welcoming environment grounded in Indigenous cultural values and practices
  • Build trusting relationships with clients recognizing the impacts of intergenerational trauma and systemic barriers
  • Incorporate cultural knowledge traditions and community connections into intake processes where appropriate
Coordination & Referrals
  • Connect clients to housing units support services and community resources (health mental health addictions income support etc.)
Program Administration
  • Track vacancies andmaintainwaitlists for supportive housing programs
  • Prepare reports intake statistics and program data asrequired
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies privacy standards and funding requirements
Community Engagement
  • Participate in outreach activities to connect with urban Indigenous populations experiencing housing insecurity
  • Attend case conferences team meetings and community networks
Communications
  • Communicate all relevant information to theappropriate Coordinator. This may be important client information anything a client has revealed that needs to be followed up and any unforeseen problems or situations
Other Duties:
  • Maintain a workplace environment and approach that meets the cultural and wholistic needs of Indigenous clients.
  • Practice andmaintaina positive role; lead by example with trauma-informed non-judgemental support.
  • Assistin deescalating situations by using conflict resolution skills
  • Commit to the development of the MNFC andparticipatein internal committeesprojectsand activities.
  • Attend andparticipatein professional development opportunities asrequired.
  • Adhere to all policies governing the MNFC ergo the DBHC policies
  • May preform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience Required for the Position:
  • Diploma or degree in social work human services Indigenousstudiesor a related field (or equivalent lived/work experience)
  • Knowledge of housing systemshomelessnessand supportive housing models
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and comprehensive cultural knowledge considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated skills in guiding individuals and theutilizationof new practices in working with clients based on models of practice and Indigenous culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a part of an interprofessional team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability torepresentand respect the interest of clients.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook Access PowerPoint).
  • Successful applicant willbe requiredto provide a Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check)Reliable means of transportation (must own a working vehicle) Provide copy of valid class 5 drivers license recent abstract.
