Job Summary

This position is available through the Canada Summer Job Grant. To be eligible to apply you must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • be a Canadian Citizen Permanent Resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) is a non-profit charitable organization working in Alberta since 1995 to strengthen community capacity and build healthier and stronger communities. The AHCs objective is to improve the lives of individuals and communities in which they live through provision of public education and other capacity building initiatives to enable them to enhance their own lives.

Job Summary

The Summer Program Youth Facilitator will support either high school youth or elementary-aged children from immigrant families in a day camp setting depending on the assigned program site. They will be responsible for leading activities that promote social emotional mental and physical well-being. The Facilitator will serve as a positive role model and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by following established procedures and protocols.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support activity planning and developing engaging program activities.
  • Facilitate interactive group activities aligned with program objectives while ensuring the safety and well-being of participants by following established procedures and protocols.
  • Preparing program supplies organizing and delivering them to program sites and ensuring they are ready for scheduled activities.
  • Provide appropriate support and guidance to children with behavioural challenges to ensure a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Completing assigned administrative tasks such as writing activity reports collecting registration forms entering information into the student list contacting parents/youth to guide them on how to register and how to get to the program site making phone calls to participants for communication and program information maintaining attendance records and conducting evaluations with students and summarizing the results.
  • Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Education or training in Child and Youth Care Education Social Work or a related field with the ability to effectively support children including those with behavioural challenges.
  • Experience working with children and youth including managing behavioral challenges and maintaining a positive structured environment
  • Strong leadership skills and possess cultural sensitivity
  • Proficient public speaking skills and confident facilitation skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications (e.g. Excel Word PowerPoint) online platforms (e.g. virtual meetings Kahoot Mural) and design/presentation tools (e.g. Canva Prezi).
  • Ability to speak languages in addition to English is an asset.
  • Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector check is required.



Working Conditions:

  • Work hours will involve a combination of time spent at program sites on field trips and in the office.
  • The program end date may vary depending on the assigned site as noted at the beginning of this document.
  • Full availability for the entire program period is required.
  • Program activities will take place both indoors and outdoors.
  • Duties include preparing light snacks for participants.
  • The role involves setting up transporting and cleaning up program materials
