JOB TITLE:

Animal Care and Facility Manager Science Institute

JOB PURPOSE:Oversee security and facility operations and coordinate the care feeding handling and humane euthanasia of research animals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage operations of a moderate-sized vivarium (mouse amphibian fish) including daily health checks; cage/tank changing and washing; animal facility and personnel safety and proper handling of biohazardous waste.
  • Maintainstandard operating proceduresfor animal carein compliance with regulatory requirements and university policiesand infamiliarity with the needs offaculty investigators.
  • Purchase animal care supplies andmaintainvivariumbudgetwhileforecasting expenses monitoring expendituresandidentifyingcost-saving opportunities.
  • Recruit trainsuperviseand assess the performance of staff. Provide orientation and training for faculty and student facility users in proper animal care handling and restraint as needed. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops monitoring publications and establishing networks.
  • Coordinate and consult with attending veterinarian. Develop a positive and productive working relationship with veterinarian and institutional care and use committee.
  • Provide data collection andmaintainup-to-date records in compliance with localstateand federal statutes and regulations ().
  • Supervise the procurement inventory management and quality control of animals supplies and equipment. Transport research and diagnostic animals as needed.
  • This position requires working some weekendsholidaysand vacation periods ( break) to ensure continuity of dailyanimalhealthchecks.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Must be able to wear respiratory protective equipment ifrequiredbased on research needs occupational and safety requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience: 4 years work-related experience

Required licensure certification registration or other requirements:

  • Valid drivers licensewith a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with theDriving for University Business SAP.
  • CITI training on IACUC federal regulations required upon hire
  • IACUC Animal Occupational Health and Safety Certification required upon hire

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree
  • Certification as Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)
  • Work-related experience in animal care in an agricultural pet store veterinary clinic or laboratory setting
  • Experience in training mentoring and managing employees
  • Willingness to learn new skills and master multiple tasks quickly
  • General computer skills knowledge of MS Office and ability to master computer programs
  • Commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to maintain accurate notes and logs and complete detailed work accurately
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Work well in a team environment
