Job Summary

About the Role

AECOM is seeking a full-time Materials Testing Technician to join our materials testing and geotechnical laboratory team in Calgary Alberta. This role is ideal for a lab and field-focused technician who enjoys hands-on testing work while maintaining exposure to field programs and construction support activities.

You will work closely with a team of experienced geotechnical technologists engineers-in-training and professional engineers supporting infrastructure transportation energy and land development projects across Western Canada. AECOM is committed to mentorship technical growth and developing long term careers for motivated technical professionals.

What Youll Do

Field Support & Construction Monitoring

  • Perform field density testing using nuclear densometers and other standard equipment.
  • Support field programs including site visits subcontractor coordination and geotechnical investigations.
  • Monitor construction activities including fill placement subgrade inspections proof rolling instrumentation installation and pile installation.
  • Provide guidance and troubleshooting for earthworks quality control (e.g. fill compaction and excavations).
  • Assist with field investigations such as test pits drilling programs and instrumentation installation and monitoring as required.

Laboratory & Materials Testing

  • Conduct laboratory testing of soils concrete aggregates and asphalt in accordance with CSA ASTM CCIL and project-specific standards.
  • Prepare label store and manage soil and materials samples.
  • Maintain a clean organized and efficient laboratory including sample and equipment inventory.
  • Calibrate inspect and maintain testing equipment in accordance with QA/QC procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement of laboratory methods workflows and quality standards.
  • Coordinate testing priorities with engineers and project managers to meet project timelines.
  • Continue developing technical skills and certifications.

Reporting Coordination & Team Collaboration

  • Prepare accurate and timely laboratory and field reports.
  • Clearly communicate results observations and non-conformances to internal teams and clients.
  • Coordinate testing schedules with project teams to meet deadlines.
  • Provide technical input and troubleshooting related to materials testing and earthworks quality.

Health Safety & Professional Development

  • Actively promote and adhere to AECOMs health and safety culture policies and procedures.
  • Participate in training certifications and mentorship opportunities.
  • Support and mentor junior technicians as appropriate.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements

  • 4 years of experience in materials testing (soils asphalt concrete) and earthworks construction monitoring.
  • Radiation Safety Training for nuclear gauge use.
  • Working knowledge of CSA and ASTM testing standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg (e.g. samples and testing equipment).
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends as required.
  • Ability to travel intermittently within Western Canada.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers licence.

Preferred Qualifications & Assets

  • CCIL certification (Concrete Testing Technician) or eligibility to obtain.
  • Registration with or eligibility for ASET.
  • Experience with instrumentation installation monitoring and drilling programs.
  • Experience supporting Alberta Transportation City of Calgary or similar public infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in a high-throughput materials testing laboratory.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Strong written communication organization and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively solve complex problems and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative.
