About the CVICU

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) is a 16-bed cardiovascular/cardiothoracic critical care unit specializing in the care of patients following open-heart and cardiothoracic procedures. The primary patient population includes post-operative CABG patients who typically recover in the ICU for 23 days as well as patients requiring ICU-level care after complex cardiac and vascular interventions.

Patients include those admitted directly from the operating room following open-heart vascular or thoracic surgeries as well as individuals undergoing TAVR procedures and STEMI interventions.

Nurses in the CVICU care for highly complex patients requiring advanced therapies and technology including:

  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Swan-Ganz catheters
  • Vasopressors and inotropic infusions
  • High-alert medication drips
  • Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP)
  • Impella devices
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Chest tube management

Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:2 with 1:1 assignment for highly acute patients. Staffing is acuity-based with flexibility to meet the needs of the unit and ensure safe high-quality care.

About the SICU

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a 17-bed unit dedicated to caring for critically ill patients who are hemodynamically unstable or at risk of acute organ failure. The SICU provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients experiencing or at risk for significant physiological deterioration.

The patient population includes medical-surgical surgical and trauma patients requiring close monitoring advanced interventions and interdisciplinary collaboration to support recovery and optimal outcomes.

Scope of work

The Clinical Nurse Manager is an experienced leader responsible for the overall management of assigned units and services. This role provides leadership and oversight of patient care staff to support a culture of excellence in clinical practice staff engagement recruitment and retention and strong clinical and operational outcomes.

The Nurse Manager ensures the safe and effective delivery of patient care while maintaining compliance with all regulatory administrative and clinical standards as well as organizational policies and procedures. Serving as a key advocate for safety and retention the Nurse Manager leverages data technology and evidence-based practices to drive decision-making and proactively mitigate risk.

This role fosters a desirable and supportive work environment that enables staff and the organization to meet or exceed strategic goals. The Nurse Manager models effective communication and collaboration with physicians staff patients and interdisciplinary partners. Role-specific responsibilities and competencies align with the organizations Professional Practice Model.

The position reports to the Director of Nursing or above.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Under general direction the Clinical Nurse Manager maintains 24-hour accountability for leadership and management of a designated patient care unit. Responsibilities include promoting high-quality nursing care cost-effective resource utilization staff professional development and a Patient- and Family-Centered Care culture.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience
  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • One year of formal nursing leadership experience (external candidates)

Preferred

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • Two years of demonstrated informal leadership experience for internal candidates which may include roles such as Charge Nurse Lead Nurse or participation in Shared Governance Councils
