JOB TITLE:
Manufacturing Intern
JOB PURPOSE:
An opportunity is available for a Mechanical/Energy Systems Engineering student to assist with designing and building experimental & educational systems for a wide range of disciplines across the UW campus in the Engineering Shop. This hands-on internship position is multiple parts: System integration mechanical design CAD modeling and time spent working in the shops (fabrication machining soldering wiring sweeping/mopping daily upkeep etc). The position will allow up to to 40hr/week during the Summer 2026 Semester with the potential for staying on during the school year following at reduced rate of 10hr/week during the semester. Hourly Rate: $14/hr no overtime pay.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
You may be asked to perform a wide range of tasks to meet the shops needs including:
- Machine shop daily duties (Sweeping organizing & cleaning as needed)
- Mechanical design & occasional machining/fabrication
- Generate solid models assemblies and detailed fabrication drawings Solidworks or Fusion 360
- Generate cost estimates
- Generate basic system schematics
- Work with some electrical wiring & controls
- Repair laboratory equipment including soldering & troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot system problems using tools such as oscilloscope multi-meter & other basic hand tools
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Energy Systems Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
- Have completed Mechanics of Materials Electrical Circuits I & Statics/Dynamics courses (Sophomore level & up).
- Must maintain good interpersonal communication listening skills & ability to discuss technical concepts with co-workers & customers.
- Have some Solidworks/Fusion 360 experience & desire to learn/implement more.
- Have some related shop experience (fabrication machining working w/power tools) & willingness to learn more as needed.
- Have spent some time working with basic electricity electronics or circuits.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Having spent time working in a manufacturing/machine shop or other construction/industrial setting.
- Experience completing machining/welding mechanical/electrical repair and diagnosis of equipment from small to large.
- Have completed courses in Physical Computing Materials System Dynamics Fluid Mechanics Manufacturing Processes or Technical Writing.
- Understand/have experience with analog to digital conversion electrical noise data/controls systems basic computer or microcontroller programming etc

TRAINING
The Manufacturing intern will undergo training including hands-on time working alongside shop staff opportunity to learn LabVIEW/Arduino/Raspberry Pi & other electronics programming as well as paid opportunities to complete Solidworks certifications. The Engineering intern must be flexible to work with any of the Master Technicians Controls Engineer or Shop Manager depending on the needs of the shop.

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus understanding our location is at 7220 feet above sea level.
