The Opportunity
Bolton is a town with a proud industrial heritage and a fast-growing educational sector. We are seeking a reliable hands-on and proactive Caretaker to join a busy premises team within a local school. As a Caretaker you are the custodian of the school site ensuring that the buildings and grounds are safe secure and maintained to a high standard providing the best possible environment for pupils to learn.
The Role & Department
You will work as part of the Site Management team reporting to the School Business Manager or Premises Manager.
The role is diverse and active requiring a can-do attitude to manage everything from emergency repairs to daily health and safety checks.
You will be a key presence on-site often acting as the first point of contact for contractors and deliveries.
This position typically involves a split-shift pattern (e.g. 7:00 AM 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM 6:30 PM) to manage the opening and closing of the school.
Core Responsibilities
Site Security: Responsible for the daily unlocking and locking of school buildings and gates ensuring all intruder alarms and fire doors are fully operational.
General Maintenance: Carrying out essential first-fix repairs including minor plumbing (unblocking sinks) carpentry painting and decorating to keep the site in top condition.
Health & Safety Compliance: Conducting and recording regular safety inspections including fire alarm testing emergency lighting checks and water temperature monitoring (Legionella prevention).
Grounds Upkeep: Ensuring the school grounds car parks and play areas are clean tidy and free of hazards. This includes gritting and snow clearance during the winter months to keep the site accessible.
Porterage: Moving furniture and equipment to set up for assemblies examinations and evening school events or community lettings.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a practical individual who takes pride in maintaining a professional environment. Requirements include:
Experience: Previous experience in caretaking site maintenance or a manual trade (e.g. joinery or plumbing) is highly desirable.
Problem Solving: The ability to identify maintenance issues early and find practical cost-effective solutions.
Reliability: A trustworthy and punctual nature with the physical fitness required to navigate a large site and handle heavy lifting.
Communication: A friendly and professional manner when interacting with staff pupils and external visitors.
