Purpose of the Role
The Instructional Designer and LMS Administrator is a central role within Lyceum Colleges digital learning ecosystem. Working as a peer to the Learning Systems Support Specialist the incumbent holds primary responsibility for the design development and continuous improvement of online learning experiences across the institutions sole modality of Open Distance Learning (ODL) portfolio.
Where the Learning Systems Support Specialist is responsible for the platform on which learning is delivered the Instructional Designer and LMS Administrator is responsible for what happens inside that platform: the structure of courses the sequencing of learning activities the quality and accessibility of learning materials and the pedagogical integrity of what students encounter online. The two roles together form the institutional capability that supports academic staff in delivering high-quality online learning and supports students in engaging meaningfully with it.
This is a mid-level role that combines hands-on design work with strategic input into how the institution approaches digital pedagogy. The incumbent will partner with academic staff across faculties to translate subject expertise into well-structured learner-centred online courses and will contribute to building the practices templates and standards that shape the Lyceum online learning experience.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this role are organised across the following key performance areas:
Course Design and Development (30%)
Design and develop online courses and modules for the ODL portfolio using sound instructional design principles and established frameworks such as ADDIE backward design and Blooms Taxonomy adapted to the realities of distance learners.
Translate subject-matter content provided by academic staff into well-structured sequenced and engaging online learning experiences.
Draft and refine learning outcomes assessment blueprints activity sequences and formative and summative assessment items aligned to those outcomes.
Develop storyboards learning pathway maps and module blueprints that guide the build of each course before it is placed on the LMS.
Produce and curate learning assets including written content infographics short video scripts interactive elements and resource lists using appropriate authoring tools.
Apply principles of constructive alignment to ensure that learning outcomes learning activities and assessments are coherent and mutually reinforcing.
Faculty Partnership and Instructional Support (20%)
Partner with academic staff across faculties as a thought partner in the design and redesign of their online courses translating their subject expertise into effective online instruction.
Facilitate course-design workshops planning sessions and one-to-one consultations with lecturers and programme coordinators.
Provide constructive evidence-informed feedback on draft course structures assessments and learning materials.
Build the pedagogical capacity of academic staff by sharing practice guides worked examples and short training sessions on topics such as online assessment design active learning online and learner engagement.
Support academic staff in transitioning existing contact-mode content into forms appropriate for distance and online delivery.
Act as a trusted approachable resource for faculty members who are new to online teaching or seeking to improve an established course.
Learning Experience and Student Engagement (15%)
Design online learning experiences that are intentionally inclusive of distance learners including those who are working adults first-generation students and students with limited bandwidth or digital confidence.
Incorporate principles of student engagement motivation and self-regulation into the design of courses drawing on established frameworks such as the Community of Inquiry.
Design and review orientation journeys welcome experiences and first-week activities that help students build confidence and a sense of belonging within their courses.
Embed opportunities for meaningful interaction in course design including student-to-content student-to-student and student-to-lecturer interaction.
Use learning design to support retention throughput and student success across the ODL portfolio.
LMS Configuration and Course Build (15%)
Build and configure courses on the institutions LMS (Moodle) including course layout activity and resource setup grading configuration and the application of institutional templates and branding.
Apply sound LMS practice to course builds including appropriate use of Moodle activity types (assignments quizzes forums lessons workshops H5P) grouping restrict-access conditions and activity completion tracking.
Work closely with the Learning Systems Support Specialist on integrations plugins and platform-level settings that affect the learner experience.
Use LMS data and analytics to inform design decisions identify where students are disengaging and iterate on course structure and content.
Support the setup of digital assessments including quizzes online submissions and integration with plagiarism-detection tools in line with institutional assessment policy.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of institutional LMS course templates that ensure consistency across the online learning portfolio.
Quality Assurance Accessibility and Compliance (10%)
Apply institutional and sector-standard quality assurance criteria to course design drawing on frameworks such as Quality Matters or equivalent for online course review.
Ensure that online courses meet accessibility standards including WCAG principles and are usable by students with a range of abilities devices and connectivity.
Support the accreditation and reaccreditation of programmes by ensuring that online course design and delivery evidence meets CHE and DHET expectations for distance and online learning.
Participate in internal peer-review processes for online courses and contribute to moderation panels where appropriate.
Ensure that online learning design complies with institutional policies on academic integrity assessment intellectual property and POPIA.
Ecosystem Collaboration and Continuous Improvement (10%)
Work in close partnership with the Learning Systems Support Specialist to ensure that the platform and the pedagogy evolve in step with the Instructional Designer owning the learning experience and the Learning Systems Support Specialist owning the platform capability.
Contribute to the development of shared tools for the Digital Learning Ecosystem including design templates course-review rubrics staff training materials and student-facing support resources.
Engage with emerging practice in online and distance learning including AI in education learning analytics and open educational resources and translate relevant developments into practical application at Lyceum.
Contribute to internal communities of practice for academic staff interested in improving their online teaching.
Support the continuous improvement of the Lyceum online learning experience through reflection data and student and staff feedback.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
A relevant qualification in Education Instructional Design Educational Technology or a related field.
A postgraduate qualification in Instructional Design Higher Education Educational Technology or Curriculum Studies is strongly advantageous.
Certifications in instructional design frameworks (for example ADDIE SAM) Quality Matters or LMS-specific credentials (Moodle) are advantageous.
A minimum of two (2) years of hands-on instructional design experience with at least one (1) year in a higher education or Open Distance Learning context.
Demonstrated track record of having designed and built online courses or modules from the ground up end to end.
Experience building and configuring courses on an LMS with Moodle strongly preferred.
Experience using authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline Rise H5P Canva for Education or equivalent.
Skills and Competencies
Strong working knowledge of instructional design frameworks and theories applied practically to online course design.
Working proficiency in Moodle or an equivalent LMS including activity configuration grading and course layout.
Proficiency with content authoring tools (H5P Articulate or equivalent) and basic multimedia production (short video audio infographics).
Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and universal design for learning principles.
Strong collaboration and facilitation skills with the ability to work constructively with academic staff across diverse disciplines.
Excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to explain instructional design concepts accessibly to non-specialists.
Sound judgement in balancing pedagogical ambition with practical implementation realities.
