Job Summary

2 months contract with a local authority

Job Purpose

  • To provide an independent structural checking service on behalf of Building Control ensuring that building designs comply with the requirements of Part A (Structure) of the Building Regulations. The role supports the Building Control Service in maintaining high standards of compliance performance and customer service while contributing to the services continued improvement and market presence.

Key Duties/Accountabilities

  • Review and assess structural designs calculations and technical reports for compliance with Part A of the Building Regulations.
  • Provide professional structural advice to Building Control Surveyors and other stakeholders as required.
  • Identify non-compliances and provide clear practical recommendations to achieve regulatory compliance.
  • Liaise with applicants agents engineers and architects to resolve structural design issues efficiently.
  • Support consistent decision-making within the Building Control team.
  • Contribute to maintaining excellent customer service standards and service performance.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legislation technical standards and industry best practice.

Essential Experience Required

  • Proven experience working as a Structural Engineer within a consultancy local authority or regulatory environment.
  • Demonstrable experience reviewing and checking structural designs and calculations.
  • Familiarity with UK Building Regulations particularly Part A (Structure).
  • Experience working with Building Control or undertaking design checking on behalf of regulatory bodies is highly desirable.

Essential Qualifications Required

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering.
  • Membership of either:
  • Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) or
  • Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE or equivalent).

Additional information to note

  • Working Hours: 14.50 hours per week.
  • Work pattern - 2 days per week
  • We work on bi-weekly schedule.

Required Skills:

If you are interested in providing a structural checking service on behalf of building control reviewing the design against the requirements of Part A Structure this role would enable you to obtain further experience of the Councils building control. The Building Control team is at the forefront of ensuring development meets the necessary building regulations and we are currently looking to strengthen the team to maintain the excellent customer service and market share currently provided. Minimum qualifications required are membership of either MICE or Stuct Eng. This role will support the performance of the Service and its continued improvement with emphasis placed on compliance with the Building Regulations.
