Purpose of the role:
Provides first-line HR advice and guidance to managers interpreting People policies and procedures to ensure consistent fair and legally compliant application across the business. Supports managers with employee lifecycle activities offering practical guidance on standard people matters and escalating complex high-risk or non-standard cases where appropriate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide clear confident interpretation of People policies and procedures advising managers on appropriate and consistent application in day-to-day people decisions
- Support a range of employee lifecycle events ensuring processes are managed efficiently sensitively and in line with policy and legislation including:
- Family leave (maternity paternity adoption and shared parental leave) providing guidance on entitlements processes and documentation
- Flexible working requests supporting managers through statutory and non-statutory requests and advising on fair decision-making
- Absence management including guidance on policy application trigger points and next steps
- Manage Occupational Health referrals supporting managers to submit timely and appropriate referrals acting as the liaison with the provider and ensuring recommendations are clearly understood and progressed
- Advise managers on reasonable adjustments arising from health or Occupational Health recommendations supporting fair practical implementation and escalating where adjustments present complexity risk or operational challenge
- Conduct and coordinate exit interviews capturing and analysing feedback to identify themes risks and improvement opportunities and sharing insights with relevant stakeholders
- Advise managers on low-level conduct and capability matters providing practical guidance on informal processes and early intervention
- Coach and support managers to build confidence and capability in effective people management and policy-led decision-making
- Ensure consistency fairness and risk awareness in all advice given considering employee relations legal and organisational impact
- Identify potential risks or precedents and proactively recommend appropriate actions or escalation
- Escalate complex high-risk or formal employee relations cases (e.g. disciplinary grievance or long-term absence) to Tier 3 ensuring a clear handover and relevant information is provided
Required Skills & Competencies

- Good understanding of HR processes
- Coaching and influencing skills
- Problem-solving and sound judgement
- Ability to manage multiple cases pieces of work and priorities simultaneously
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience in an HR advisory or similar HR role
- Familiarity with HR systems
- Experience working in a fast-paced operational environment preferred
- Experience supporting operational or blue-collar workforces desirable
- CIPD Level 3 or 5 (or working towards)
