Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research Empas around 1100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
OurMagnetic & Functional Thin Films Group designs and fabricates magnetic and functional thin films with tailored properties arising from nanoscale effects. These films are used in applications ranging from magnetoelectronic devices to biomedical coatings.
Your tasks
This project aims to establish magnetic disk particles (MDPs) at the physical limit of performance for magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and sensing applications. The position offers a unique opportunity to bridge fundamental magnetism advanced nanofabrication and translational biomedical research. The successful candidate will be based at Empa and play a central role in designing and realizing optimized magnetic multilayer systems.
Your role at Empa
Design optimized magnetic multilayer thin films guided by micromagnetic modeling
Fabrication via sputter deposition
Nanopatterning of disk-shaped particles and suspension fabrication
Magnetic characterization (VSM MOKE MFM)
Close collaboration with micromagnetic modeling work (Prof. Dieter Suess University of Vienna)
Close collaboration on MPI and MPS measurements (Prof. Dr. Matthias Graeser University of Rostock)
Close collaboration on particle functionalization and biomedical validation (Prof. Inge K. Herrmann Empa / ETH Zurich / University of Zurich / Balgrist University Hospital)
Close collaboration on nanopatterning using polystyrene-based lithography (Prof. Michał Krupiński Kraków Poland)
Your profile
Essential
PhD in physics materials science or related field
Expertise in thin film magnetism
Strong publication record
Strong interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of physics engineering and biomedical applications
Highly desirable
Experience in micro- and nanofabrication
Experience in micromagnetic modeling
Our offer
We offer a high-visibility project with significant exposure and impact
You will work with state-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge resources
The role involves strong international collaboration across leading institutions
You will enjoy a high degree of scientific independence in your work
Your research will have meaningful translational impact
We provide competitive Swiss employment conditions
The position is available for two years with potential for prolongation.
We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation CV certificates diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
