Teacher - Public Safety/Law & Justice
REPORTS TO: Principal

SALARY GRADE: State Salary Schedule plus local supplement

Public Safety
This course provides basic career information in public safety including corrections emergency and fire management security and protection law enforcement and legal services. FEMA certifications NIMSare also a part of this course. Additionally students will develop a personal plan for a career in public safety. The course includes skills in each area using resources from the community to help deliver instruction to the students. English language arts are reinforced.
Law and Justice
Students desiring to pursue a career in Law and Justice will examine the basic concepts of law related to citizens rights and officers responsibilities to maintain a safe society. This course is aligned to an industry recognized certification in Basic Law Enforcement Knowledge for those desiring a career in Law enforcement. The course discusses the history and development of law enforcement in the United States components of the criminal justice system including the roles and responsibilities of the police courts and corrections and classification and elements of crimes. Students will receive instruction in critical skill areas including communicating with diverse groups conflict resolution the use of force continuum report writing operation of police and emergency equipment and courtroom testimony. Career planning and employability skills will be emphasized. English language arts are reinforced.

NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this class provides direct instruction to students. A wide variety of tasks are performed in the teaching-learning process for students the primary one being to help students learn the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature able and responsible adults. A teacher performs his/her duties under the supervision of and reports to the principal.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional Duties may be assigned.

  • Teaches District approved curriculum
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Plans a program of study employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media that meets the individual needs interests and abilities of the students
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons units projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students
  • Assists in diagnosing the learning disabilities of students with the assistance of district specialists
  • Evaluates pupils academic and social growth keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports
  • Maintains accurate complete and correct records as required by law district policy and administrative regulations
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Must hold or obtain the International Foundation for Protective Officers (IFPO) certification within the first year of teaching.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Language Skills - Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers clients customers and the general public.

Mathematical Skills - Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills - Familiarity with basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.

Work Environment - The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee may encounter and include a noise level that is usually moderate to loud. Other - Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students peers and parents; skills in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision color vision and depth perception. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to lift files and paper.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma two year degree or four year degree from a college or university
  • Valid N.C. teaching license/certification or be able to obtain such
