Job Summary

Job Title:Director of School Counseling

Location:Charlottesville High School

Reports to:Principal

FLSA Status:Exempt

Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Director of School Counseling (High School) is to support the development and implementation of a school counseling program based upon the identified needs of the students. The Director of School Counseling will provide leadership to ensure: implementation of the school counseling program at the school integration of school counseling with the total educational curriculum of the school and hiring of qualified diverse school counselors. The Director of School Counseling will provide individual and group supervision to school counselors in practice and complete the evaluation process using aligned performance standards & evaluation criteria.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages the daily activities of school counseling at Charlottesville High School and any assigned alternative high schools and programs.
  • Assists the School Principal in ensuring that the schools policies and procedures related to school counseling meet state federal and division requirements.
  • Supervises school counselors and assigned clerical staff in the day-to-day operation of the department.
  • Maintains high levels of effectiveness with Professional Learning Communities whereby student data are analyzed and teams collaborate for enhancing school improvement.
  • Provides leadership in the implementation of college and career readiness programs student academic planning and social-emotional development including the development of curriculum and being the point of contact for related software.
  • Leads efforts to involve the home and family in the school counseling program including providing workshops for parents and families to assist them in acquiring an understanding of students and techniques and strategies essential for academic and personal/social growth.
  • Participates in curriculum development/revision and serves on the schools instructional leadership team which analyzes data about student achievement.
  • Coordinates student referrals with appropriate student services staff and community agencies.
  • Provides leadership in implementing MTSS that improves student learning and achievement outcomes.
  • Oversees the implementation of the 504 process from initial meetings to classroom communication.
  • Provides overall coordination of special activities/events involving the school counseling department of the assigned school to include new student orientation programs career fairs financial aid workshops curriculum fairs and parenting workshops etc.
  • Assists the School Principal with monitoring and evaluating the school counseling program to ensure effective utilization of staff and resources and recommends revisions and improvements as needed.
  • Collect analyze and use data to develop implement and evaluate the school counseling program in collaboration with central office administration.
  • Provides consultation and in-service to give teachers and administrators in the school information strategies and approaches for maximizing the total development of students including academic and social needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of national state and local school counseling standards.
  • Implements a comprehensive and efficient system for maintaining records of school counseling services and student records at the assigned school.
  • Maintain the Charlottesville High School counseling web page
  • Collaborate with the Pathways Adviser and other CCS and external personnel regarding scholarships financial aid and post-secondary planning
  • Performs duties as a School Counselor.
  • Proficiency with or ability to learn multiple applications including but not limited to PowerSchool Schoolinks Canvas and Google.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Possess effective interpersonal communication; independently prepare clear concise communication; analyze situations and formulate effective responses; balance and optimize skills and contributions of others; create an atmosphere that allows others to share expertise; promote positive solution-oriented communication; ability to focus on improving service and support processes procedures and productivity; lead or direct organization-wide efforts to accomplish professional strategic service and support objectives in school counseling; act proactively in addressing needs and assistance to others; ability to assess multiple tasks or projects to develop processes to address them; equitably and effectively assign responsibilities to others to accomplish projects; anticipate and identify potential program situations and develop strategies or policy for resolution; participate in setting strategic priorities in school counseling; lead major organization-wide multifaceted projects and initiatives; demonstrate knowledge of principles concepts and methods of school counseling programs curriculum development and best practices understand how to integrate technology into school counseling to extend and enable opportunities beyond the traditional high school environment.

Education and/or Experience:

Candidates must have a school counseling endorsement (School counselor preK-12) and either an administrative endorsement (Administration and Supervision PreK-12) or a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited doctoral program.

Candidates must have at least 3 years of experience as a school counselor in a public school.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

Typically the job is performed in an office setting primarily using computer office equipment. Travel to occasional state-wide and regional training is required. Attendance at meetings both during the school day and beyond is required. There is frequent interaction with principals teachers other central office leadership and the public. Other physical activities are required such as but not limited to bending stooping reaching and grasping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and visual acuity is required for monitoring and determining needs. This position is subject to inside environmental conditions noise and hazards. The job generally requires approximately 80% sitting 10% walking and 10% standing.

Evaluation:

The Director of School Counseling is evaluated by the principal.
