The Opportunity:
The Portfolio Management Group sits at the heart of Hamilton Lanes portfolio journey with investors.
We start with quantitative research to provide insights when designing private market portfolios strategically steering them as they mature and ensuring portfolio outcomes are achieved by placing investments and managing all factors that impact net returns for investors.
The team partners with investment teams (who source and diligence each investment) and client managers (who manage relationships with investors) to provide robust portfolios for evergreen funds (semi-liquids) separately managed accounts and closed-end funds across all asset classes in private markets.
Your responsibilities will be to:
PMG London summer interns will be given projects combined with recurring tasks to complete in the 8 week programme. The programme will conclude with a presentation you will provide to the PMG team in London.
Projects:
- These are projects that are either quantitative research based related to private markets or technical process enhancements that help the team speed up existing workflows
- Example of a project:
- Landscape of European private credit comparisons to US private credit and how investors can build better portfolios combining European private credit alongside US private credit
Recurring tasks:
- These are tasks that give you insight on the day-to-day work analysts on the team have to complete. They may relate to our workflow for portfolio proposals quantitative research or equity portfolios
- Example of a recurring task:
- Attend weekly pre-investment committee meetings for buyout investments listening to deals being presented every Thursday
- Summarise the key points for each deal needed to make portfolio decisions to members of the PMG team. To be discussed every Friday in our weekly portfolio management meeting
End of internship presentation:
- Present at our global PMG team meeting about your research project and 1 buyout deals fit in a specific portfolio you learnt about in the recurring task
- Types of work analysts do that you will be exposed to:
- Analyse proprietary data sets that support Hamilton Lanes portfolio construction philosophy investment allocation decisions and in-depth market research.
- Use quantitative analysis to develop a deep understanding of all private markets strategies pursued by Hamilton Lane including leveraged buyouts private credit infrastructure growth equity and venture capital and real estate across fund investments co-investments and secondaries.
- Assess the development performance and risk factors of client portfolios and make recommendations on adjustments to portfolio strategy
- Address queries from clients prospects and industry partners related to portfolio construction.
- Combine investment acumen with quantitative analysis to support the investment process and promote the firm as an industry thought leader.
- Work on special research projects and other company initiatives including development of portfolio construction tools the firms annual market overview and technology initiatives
Your background will include:
- Undergraduate or Masters students graduating between September 2026 through June 2027.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm and aptitude for working with numerical data and solving quantitative challenges with a strong interest in applying these skills within the investment domain
- Demonstrated interest in the Investment and asset management industry interest in private markets are a plus but training will be provided
- Experience with basic statistical analysis
- Experience and interest working with big data including showing interest in scripting languages
- Programming / scripting skills (SQL R Python MATLAB etc.) are a plus but will be provided as part of your training
- Skilled in and have a passion for using AI to increase efficiency in workflows
- Ability to work effectively within a team able to show examples of being a team player and working towards a shared goal. For example via group projects societies sports or music
- Skilled in effectively communicating insights and conclusions to diverse audiences
- Examples of being a self-starter with a drive to excel
- Proficiency in the English language
