Position Requirements
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required; Associates or Bachelors degree preferred.
- Minimum of 23 years of experience as a full-time law enforcement officer with preference for previous SRO experience.
- Valid Peace Officer certification (POST or TCOLE) and SRO certification (typically 40 hours).
- Must pass comprehensive background checks including fingerprinting.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of federal state and local laws juvenile law and legal procedures regarding school searches seizures and arrests.
- Familiarity with safety assessments crisis management emergency response planning (e.g. active shooter/assailant protocols) and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
- Understanding the adolescent brain mental health crises and social-emotional needs of students.
- Knowledge of social service resources community agencies and security technology (surveillance access control).
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills including active listening public speaking for classroom instruction and the ability to interact with students staff and parents.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly manage conflicts and use de-escalation techniques as a first resort.
- Ability to act as an informal counselor positive role model and mentor to students.
- Proficiency with technology including Google Suite incident reporting software and social media platforms.
- Must maintain physical fitness to perform duties such as running climbing and restraining individuals if necessary.
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision making sound decisions under stress.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team with school administrators teachers and school-based professionals.
- Flexibility to shift between roles of law enforcer educator and counselor.
- Must be able to work in the evenings and some weekends.
- Ability to engage with a diverse student body staff and community with sensitivity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position
- Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings equipment and access points; permitting entry.
- Obtains help by sounding alarms and being an active participant in emergency situations.
- Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities; informing violators of policy and procedures; reporting trespassers.
- Controls traffic by directing drivers.
- Completes reports by recording observations information occurrences and surveillance activities.
- Maintains environment by monitoring and walking patrols.
- Maintains organizations stability and reputation by complying with policies and procedures.
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturers instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
